The Universities Patent Scorecard™ represents the universities and university-based laboratories
from around the world in patenting their research in all disciplines within the United States.
Universities Patent Scorecard™ Highlights
Universities represented in the Universities Patent Scorecard account for only 2.3% of all U.S. utility
patent
issuances in the past year for an average of 33.5 patents per university, with the Top 10 accounting for
34%.
Universities have kicked their patenting efforts into high gear in the past year, with 31% more utility
patent
issuances this year than in the previous year. In fact, only 28 out of the 132 ranked universities show a
decline
in patenting, with the largest decline being only 67% as compared to the largest increase in patenting of
700%.
Twenty-three universities show increases large enough to at least double their patent portfolios. Only six
universities
show no change in patenting volume.
A number of foreign universities debut on the Universities Patent Scorecard™, including four Japanese
universities, two Taiwanese and one Swiss, the highest ranking of which being Kyoto University at #56.
Nearly
three-fourths of the universities represented in the scorecard are domestic, and of the foreign-based
ones, most
