Two Denver-Based I.P. Law Firms Team Up To Win NIH Contract to Provide Biotech Patent Legal Services

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Denver, CO -- A team of two Denver intellectual property law firms, Sheridan Ross PC and Swanson & Bratschun, LLC, received a ten-year contract to provide patent services to the National Institutes of Health for biotechnology inventions. The award is one of only six provided to firms throughout the nation.

The NIH is the premier medical research institution in the world. Its mission is to reduce the burdens of illness and disability by the application of fundamental knowledge about living systems. The patent protection of NIH research helps to transfer technology from the lab to commercialization and public availability of its benefits.

The Sheridan Ross – Swanson & Bratschun team’s qualifications and history in providing patent services in the field of biotechnology were key to the award of the contract. Members of the team have advanced degrees in the biosciences, relevant research experience and a long history of representing clients in related technologies.

According to Gary Connell, the Sheridan Ross partner who headed up the proposal to NIH, "We feel especially honored to be a Colorado-based team selected by the NIH. This achievement is reflective of the growth and success of the biotech industry in Colorado."

Of the six contactors, the Sheridan Ross – Swanson & Bratschun team is the only new member. The other five returning contractors and their headquarters offices are Edwards Angel (Boston), Klarquist Sparkman (Portland), Leydig Voit (Chicago) Townsend Townsend and Crew (San Francisco), and Woodcock Washburn (Philadelphia).

Swanson & Bratschun co-founding partner Barry Swanson said, "This award will allow us to further expand our capabilities to provide biotech patent services to the Colorado community and the industry nationwide."
