Patent Scorecard 2010 - Medical Devices & Services

The Medical Devices & Services industry consists of companies that develop and manufacture medical equipment, apparatus, instruments, devices and supplies, including items such as diagnostic test kits, monitoring and exam equipment, visual and hearing testing and supplies, surgical implements and implantable devices.

The Medical Devices & Services industry shows a significant rise in patenting in the past year with 26% more patents granted than the previous year. Most companies in the industry, whether large or small, contributed to the industry rise and saw their portfolios increase in volume. Only 45 out of the 126 companies in the industry saw declines in patenting, most of which had low volume portfolios to begin with and were issued an average of less than twenty patents a year in the past five years. As the value of Intellectual Property is better understood as an asset fundamental to a company's successful commercialization of its innovation, more and more companies rush to take advantage of the patent protection offered by the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). Patenting in general has increased by 6% in the past year and has been trending upwards since 1990.
