The Chemicals Patent Scorecard™ includes companies in the development and production of organic and inorganic compositions and processes thereof. Among the wide range of substances produced are plastics, resins polymers, paints and coatings as well as basic, intermediate, specialty, and fine chemicals.
Patents included in the Chemical Industry Scorecard grew 31% year to year. However published applications appear to be declining by 18% based on 2008 to 2009. The Chemical Industry is one of the more mature industries with patents issued tracking just below 10,000 issued patents for most of the last 10 years. The activity began to grow in 2009 to a volume of 11994 patents issued in 2010. By volume this places the Chemical Industry 12 of the 17 industries tracked. 60% of this patent volume comes from unified companies within Chemicals industry while the top 10 companies account for only 22% of the issued patents.
