Company Patents Method and Apparatus for Backing Up to a NAS-based System with Byte-Level Delta Data De-duplication, as well as Method and Apparatus for Ensuring Long-term Data Integrity and Recoverability
Westborough, MA -- ExaGrid Systems, Inc. (www.exagrid.com), the leader in cost-effective and scalable disk-based backup solutions with byte-level data de-duplication, today announced that the company has patented a method and apparatus for both backing up to a NAS-based system with byte-level delta data de-duplication, as well as ensuring long-term data integrity and recoverability. On file with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the two new patents are: U.S. Patent No. 7,246,140 "Method and Apparatus for Storage System to Provide Distributed Data Storage and Protection" and U.S. Patent No. 7,246,275 "Method and Apparatus for Managing Data Integrity of Backup and Disaster Recovery Data."
The technology innovation behind these two new ExaGrid patents delivers many real-world benefits for customers, including:
NAS-based Disk-based Backup System with Byte-Level Delta Data De-duplication
- Allows weeks to years of backup history to consume very little disk storage capacity and reduce WAN bandwidth requirements between the primary site and disaster recovery site
- Simplifies configuration and management with NAS interface to backup applications
- Enables a cost-effective, scalable architecture that increases performance and capacity as backup data continues to grow
Long-term Data Integrity and Recoverability
- Maintains the highest levels of backup data integrity over the life of the backup data, from weeks to years
- Eliminates customer concerns of not being able to successfully restore files that have been accidentally deleted by users, or recover backup data after a system or site disaster
"ExaGrid has a history of producing innovative technology and applying those innovations to solve customers’ data protection challenges," said Dave Therrien, founder and CTO, ExaGrid Systems, Inc. "With a world-class engineering organization, ExaGrid continues to build a strong intellectual property portfolio that extends our technology lead in disk-based backup and furthers our mission to provide customers with the most reliable, scalable, highest performing and most cost-effective disk-based backup system available. These new patents acknowledge the uniqueness of our technology and ExaGrid’s place as a leader in the disk-based backup market."
About ExaGrid’s Technology
The ExaGrid system is a turnkey, plug-and-play solution that works with existing backup applications and enables faster and more reliable backups and restores. Customers report that backup time is reduced by 30 to 80 percent over traditional tape backup. ExaGrid’s patented byte-level data de-duplication technology and most recent backup compression, coupled with high-quality SATA storage, is on average 25 to 30 percent the price of standard disk storage without data de-duplication. This unique approach reduces the amount of disk space needed by a range of 10 to 50 to 1, or more.
About ExaGrid Systems, Inc.
Headquartered in Westborough, Massachusetts, ExaGrid is the leader in cost-effective and scalable disk-based backup solutions with byte-level data de-duplication. A highly scalable system that works with existing backup applications, the ExaGrid system is ideal for mid-market and small enterprise companies looking to quickly eliminate the hassles of tape backup while reducing their existing backup windows. ExaGrid’s patented approach minimizes the amount of data to be stored by providing standard data compression for the most recent backups along with byte-level data de-duplication technology for all previous backups. Customers can deploy the ExaGrid system at a primary site and at a second site to supplement or eliminate offsite tapes with a live data repository or for disaster recovery.
