Leading Intellectual Property and Cyberlaw Scholars To Gather At MSU For Conference

East Lansing, MI -- MSU Law’s nationally ranked Intellectual Property & Communications Law Program with the Michigan State Law Review, announced today their fourth annual symposium, "What Ifs and Other Alternative Intellectual Property and Cyberlaw Stories" to be held March 30-31 at MSU Law.
More than 60 intellectual property and cyberlaw scholars, many nationally recognized, will gather to explore alternative stories on copyright, patent, trademark, cyberspace, media, and international intellectual property law. They will examine what might have happened had recent intellectual property and cyberspace laws and the various landmark court decisions been developed differently.
"In the past four years, we brought to the campus more than 300 intellectual property and technology law experts," said Professor Peter Yu, the program’s founding director and the event’s organizer. "The inspiration behind our numerous conferences is the strong belief that students participating in our program should learn the law not only from textbooks, but also directly from those whose works they have studied."
Professor Yu, who was recently awarded one of the six annual MSU Teacher-Scholar Awards in recognition of his devotion to and skill in teaching, adds: "This year is a little more interesting because conference participants were asked not only to present their latest research, but also to use their imagination. Frankly, I can't wait to hear the stories my colleagues have come up with."
Professor Mark A. Lemley, William H. Neukom Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and director of the Stanford Program in Law, Science and Technology, will deliver the conference’s keynote address on "Ignoring Patents."
The conference will be held at MSU College of Law from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, March 30-31. Attendance is open to the public and there is no registration fee. The Intellectual Property & Communications Law Program was established in fall 2003 to promote global, interdisciplinary understanding of intellectual property and communications law. Ranked the best among the Big Ten law schools, the program’s full-time faculty includes two distinguished scholars in intellectual property, a former attorney-adviser from the Federal Communications Commission, a leading scholar in First Amendment law, and two nationally recognized experts in international trade and sports law. It offers more than 25 courses in the field, a master’s program in intellectual property and communications law for both lawyers and non-lawyers, and a first-year legal writing course focused on intellectual property.
