Litigator Winn Carter Brings Firm Significant Patent-Litigation Reach in Texas

Houston, TX -- Morgan Lewis is pleased to announce that renowned Texas trial lawyer Winstol "Winn" Carter has joined the firm as a partner in the Litigation Practice, based in the firm’s Houston office. With 25 years of experience serving Fortune 100 clients in the energy and pharmaceutical industries, among others—as well as a remarkable record of success in Texas’s challenging patent-litigation arena—Mr. Carter will focus his practice on patent, commercial, and pharmaceutical product-liability litigation.

"Winn’s arrival marks yet another step in our continued commitment to having a powerful litigation presence in Texas—a presence that allows us to offer clients more trial capacity and the highest caliber of representation across myriad industries," said Morgan Lewis’s firmwide Litigation Practice leader, James D. Pagliaro.

Morgan Lewis’s Litigation Practice spans 18 offices worldwide and comprises 700 litigators covering a full spectrum of industries. While Morgan Lewis’s Dallas office focuses on employee benefits and finance, intellectual property, outsourcing, and technology-enabled transactions law, the firm’s Houston office predominantly handles product liability, toxic tort, commercial litigation, and insurance recovery matters.

"Now, having Winn aboard brings us an extraordinary talent and statewide reach in the area of patent litigation," said Houston office Managing Partner Brady Edwards.

Mr. Carter has successfully litigated patent disputes for clients in the energy-technology, computer, telecommunications, medical device, and life sciences industries, winning trials and negotiating favorable settlements.

In the pharmaceutical product-liability area, Mr. Carter was national trial counsel for a global pharmaceutical company in more than 300 cases involving claims that preservatives in childhood vaccines cause autism. And with a quarter century of experience successfully representing aviation-industry clients in crash-related litigation, he remains regional counsel for the world’s largest helicopter manufacturer and represents numerous airline and aviation-product manufacturers.

Mr. Carter is ranked nationally in Chambers USA (2007), and is listed in The Best Lawyers in America (2007), the International Who’s Who guides for Business Lawyers and Aviation Lawyers, Texas Super Lawyers (Texas Monthly, 2003–present), and Who’s Who Legal: Texas (2007).

He received his J.D. from Louisiana State University’s Paul M. Herbert Law Center in 1979, and his B.B.A. in accounting and finance from Southern Methodist University in 1976. He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates and is admitted to practice in Texas and Louisiana.
