Covington’s Defense of STOLICHNAYA Trademark Wins WORLDleaders International IP Award

Washington, DC -- Covington & Burling LLP was awarded the WORLDleaders International IP Award for trademark excellence at an awards dinner held at the Grosvenor House in London this past Thursday night, November 15th. The WORLDleaders IP Awards are presented annually by the publishers of Trademark World, Patent World, and Copyright World, the world’s leading titles for intellectual property specialists, to acknowledge professionals who demonstrate outstanding achievements in the three specialized fields.
Covington was honored for its successful representation of the S.P.I. Group in defending its rights to the famous STOLICHNAYA trademark against the Russian government’s effort to confiscate it in the US. The brand is one of the world’s best-selling vodkas, with annual sales of approximately $2 billion. Covington’s success with the US lawsuit resulted in worldwide representation of the company.
The Covington team consisted of lawyers from both the firm’s intellectual property and litigation practices and was led by Trademark and Copyright Group co-chairs Bing Leverich and Laurie Self, and litigation partners Oscar Garibaldi and Eugene Gulland. The team also included IP special counsel Marie Lavalleye and associate Hope Hamilton, and litigation partner Emily Henn.
