Morgan & Finnegan Elects Two New Partners

New York, NY -- Morgan & Finnegan, L.L.P., one of the nation’s premier intellectual property law firms, has announced that associates Tod M. Melgar of the New York office and James Hwa of the Washington, D.C. office, have been elected partners at the firm.

"Tod and James have contributed substantially to the success of Morgan & Finnegan and we are pleased to recognize their outstanding work by making them partners," said John F. Sweeney, a senior partner and member of the firm’s Executive Committee. "We congratulate them on their superb contribution to the firm and are delighted to welcome them to the partnership."

Mr. Melgar, who joined Morgan & Finnegan as an associate in 1999, is engaged in the litigation and prosecution of patents in a variety of technology areas, including computer software, optics, lasers and mechanical and medical instrumentation. He also has rendered non-infringement, invalidity and freedom-to-use opinions. In the trademark area, Mr. Melgar has been involved in the litigation and policing of trademarks. Prior to joining Morgan & Finnegan, he was an electromechanical engineer in the medical device and medical imaging industry.

Mr. Melgar received his J.D. from Brooklyn Law School in 1996, his M.S. in biomedical engineering from the University of Miami in 1992 and his B.S. in aerospace engineering from the University of Buffalo in 1990. Mr. Melgar, 40, resides in Garden City, NY.

Mr. Hwa, who joined Morgan & Finnegan as an associate in 1998, is involved in patent litigation before the federal district courts and the International Trade Commission, as well as in appeals before the U.S. Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. He has rendered invalidity, non-infringement and enforceability opinions, as well as clearance and patentability opinions, prepared and prosecuted patent applications, conducted due diligence investigations and advised companies on their intellectual property rights. His practice is focused on computer hardware and software, telecommunications, motors, controllers, optics and consumer products.

Mr. Hwa received his J.D. from George Washington University Law School in 1996 and his B.S. in electrical engineering from Columbia University in 1991. Mr. Hwa, 38, resides in Leesburg, VA.
