Patterson, Thuente, Skaar & Christensen Names New Partners

Friday, January 11, 2008

Minneapolis, MN -- Patterson, Thuente, Skaar & Christensen. P.A. has named Bradley J. Thorson and Scott G. Ulbrich as partners. Both attorneys have been with the firm for several years and contribute unique experience to the firm and its growing client-base.

Bradley Thorson’s practice is distinguished in that he maintains an extensive patent reissue and re-examination practice. He has represented both third-party requesters and patent owners in re-examination proceedings for more than three-dozen U.S patents, including nine of the 300 inter-partes reexaminations filed to date in the U.S. Patent Office.

Mr. Thorson also advises clients in developing, managing, and enforcing their intellectual property rights in the U.S. and worldwide. His practice encompasses all aspects of patent portfolio management including patent preparation and prosecution, product clearance and infringement opinions. He has experience with a wide range of technologies including mechanical, electro-mechanical, medical device, software, and manufacturing process inventions.

Prior to his legal career, Thorson worked as an engineer, construction industry regulator, mechanical systems designer and energy conservation researcher. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of Minnesota.

Scott Ulbrich assists clients with intellectual property litigation issues with an emphasis on patent litigation. He also handles patent prosecution and patent portfolio management for select clients. Unlike many litigators, Scott has tried patent cases to juries in the federal courts and understands the importance of being able to strategically and effectively present complex technologies to a lay jury. Recently, he represented a manufacturer of automated exterior defibrillators and successfully protected his client’s leading products in this competitive and growing area of technology.

Scott has represented clients from a wide variety of mechanical, electrical, software and manufacturing disciplines. Examples include medical devices, aerospace instrumentation, satellite antenna systems, speech-synthesis instruction, telephone call-center-testing methodology, retaining-wall blocks, portable pitching mounds and fishing gear.

"As our firm continues to grow, we will embrace leaders like Brad and Scott who are committed to maintaining our firm’s culture," said Jim Patterson, managing partner. "We are enjoying success that many boutique IP firms have not been able to achieve thanks to attorneys, like them, who respect their clients’ businesses and know how to help them reach their goals."
