TCS Issued Location Patent for Geographic Monitoring

Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Invention Triggers Automatic Messages as Users Move Into Defined Areas

TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (Nasdaq: TSYS), a leading provider of mission-critical wireless communications, today announced the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued patent number 7,321,773 for "Area Watcher For Wireless Network."

The patent enables an automatic trigger message to be sent when a wireless device moves from one geographic area to another, based upon the speed of the wireless device. The invention can be used in a variety of tracking and zone monitoring applications that need to keep track of users or other assets as they move from one location to another. The automatic messages that are sent can alert individuals or systems when a user or asset is moving, and also send the speed at which the user or device is moving.

"The ability to know when an object or person is moving into a geographic area, as well as the speed, is important for both commercial and government uses," stated Drew Morin, Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer for TCS. "In a mobile advertisement application, for example, a message may or may not be sent depending upon whether the subscriber is moving past a retail shop at pedestrian speed or highway speed. In another example, traffic speeds across a bridge or other geographic boundary can be monitored, enabling real-time traffic flow information without the need for specialized sensors."

The TCS patent portfolio contains 56 patents and 190 patent applications in the U.S. and abroad.
