AirTight Granted Two Additional Patents on Wireless Intrusion Prevention Technology
Tuesday, February 19, 2008
New Techniques Facilitate Scalable Prevention of Prevalent Threat Scenarios
Mountain View, CA -- AirTight® Networks, the creator of the de-facto industry standard for wireless intrusion prevention systems, today announced that it has been awarded two more patents, numbers 7,333,800 and 7,333,481, by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). These patents cover scalable prevention of prevalent wireless threat scenarios to reduce sensor density requirements and increase threat protection.
The first patent granted today, the 7,333,800 patent, describes technology to detect and prevent, from a single sensor, multiple simultaneous wireless policy violations. The recent increase in the density of wireless devices in and around enterprise premises naturally leads to multiple undesirable wireless connections occurring simultaneously. Conventionally, this could have been addressed only by increasing the number of sensor devices deployed within the region to be protected. This method quickly becomes cost prohibitive. AirTight's patented prevention technology facilitates stopping multiple simultaneous policy violations without having to increase sensor deployment density.
The second patent, the 7,333,481 patent, covers prevention techniques tailored for some specific threat scenarios which are not addressed by conventional prevention techniques, even when these scenarios occur in isolated fashion.
"Various wireless threat scenarios differ from each other depending on their modus operandi, and it is important to understand that there is no one-size fits-all prevention solution," said Dr. Hemant Chaskar, director of technology at AirTight. "The comprehensive security cover has to include a battery of prevention techniques each optimized for a selected set of threat scenarios, which is the function of the technology described in the 481 patent."
AirTight continuously researches a myriad of wireless threat scenarios to keep ahead of threats and to invent new prevention techniques to tackle them. These techniques are then incorporated into its SpectraGuard® Enterprise and SAFE products to provide its customers with comprehensive protection from emerging wireless security threats.
AirTight's products which have consistently outperformed its competitors in head-to-head, in-depth evaluations (including Tolly, Information Security, and the only Gartner Marketscope for wireless LAN intrusion prevention systems published to date) are protected by solid portfolio of intellectual property.
About AirTight's Patent Portfolio
With the granting of these two patents, AirTight now has a total of five U.S. patents. It has more than 25 U.S. and international patents pending, many of which are undergoing active examination at patent offices of various countries and are expected to be granted this year.
AirTight's patent portfolio covers the entire range from broad wireless intrusion prevention architectures to specific algorithms and techniques.
The seminal 7,002,943 patent for the wireless intrusion prevention was awarded to AirTight by the USPTO in February 2006. The USPTO Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences (BPAI) later ruled in favor of AirTight Networks and its U.S. Patent No. 7,002,943 in an interference action provoked by competitor, AirDefense in an attempt to usurp the 7,002,943 patent from AirTight. That ruling re-affirmed AirTight's leadership position as the first company to invent, deliver and patent a truly effective WIPS solution.
The second patent was granted in December 2006, which expanded the scope and reinforced the strength of the first.
The third patent was granted in May 2007, which gave small to medium businesses the same accurate, automated protection enjoyed by large enterprise customers.
