Barnes & Thornburg LLP Hires Leading IP Attorney in Firmís Chicago Office

Chicago, IL -- Gerald O. Sweeney, Jr. has joined Barnes & Thornburg LLP as a partner in the firm’s Chicago office. Sweeney joins Barnes & Thornburg from Howrey, LLP, and is a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property Department.

Sweeney’s practice includes, among other things, the defense and prosecution of complex contracts and injunctive relief for trade secret misappropriation, as well as the litigation of royalty and software development and services agreement disputes. Sweeney also represents consumer product manufacturers and entertainment companies in copyright and trademark infringement litigation, and provides trademark and trade dress counseling and clearance opinions. In a related area, he provides counseling and representation in matters involving the right of publicity.

Sweeney earned is B.A. cum laude in 1974 from DePauw University and his J.D. in 1979 from John Marshall Law School. He is admitted to practice in Illinois and New York state courts; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd, 6th, 7th, 9th and 10th Circuits; and the United States District Court for Colorado and Connecticut. Sweeney is also admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Central and Northern Districts of Illinois, as well as the Northern and Southern Districts of New York.
