Christie, Parker & Hale Obtains Patent Office Approval for Technology That Removes Mercury from Power-Plant Emissions

Builds Patent Estate for Solucorp Industries, Focusing on Clean Energy, Environmental Remediation

Los Angeles, CA -- Christie, Parker & Hale, LLP (CPH), a leading Southern California intellectual property law firm, today reported allowance of a patent application filed on behalf of Solucorp Industries Ltd. (OTC: SLUP), for an environmentally safe method of remediating both elemental and ionic mercury from combustion gases emitted by coal-fired power-generating plants.

Concurrent with obtaining the patent protection, West Nyack, NY-based Solucorp, which focuses on the environmental remediation industry, entered into an exclusive global licensing agreement for its IFS-2C mercury-emission control technology with CoaLogix, Inc., a company 85 percent owned by Acorn Energy, Inc. (Nasdaq: ACFN).

The protections granted to the IFS-2C technology broaden Solucorp’s already substantial portfolio of United States and foreign patents and applications focusing on the capture and fixation of heavy metals in contaminated soil, water, paint dust, and other media, according to CPH partner John D. Carpenter, who has helped build the company’s patent estate over the past several years.

"The unique Solucorp process for removing mercury and other heavy metals from combustion gases is highly effective at lowering the environmental footprint of coal-fired plants—a welcome development as demand for electricity continues to grow in the U.S. and globally," said Carpenter. "U.S. power producers, specifically, face significant pressure from federal and state regulators to reduce mercury emissions from coal-fired generating facilities."

Solucorp’s proprietary technology, already successfully tested at coal-burning power facilities, is a significant advancement in reducing heavy-metal contaminants, including elemental mercury, from ash and wastewater, according to the company. In addition to greater efficacy, the Solucorp process eliminates post-capture remediation requirements which, in turn, enhance cost efficiencies, the company said.

Noel E. Spindler, president of Solucorp’s Integrated Fixation System subsidiary, stated, "Mercury emissions are a major issue confronting today’s power industry. New, stringent regulations are leading operators of coal-fired power plants to search for cost-effective and permanent solutions to address these emissions.
