Top IP and Business Litigator Joins Womble Carlyle

Bar and Community Leader William M. Ragland, Jr. to help expand Intellectual Property and Business Litigation Practice Groups

Atlanta, GA -- Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, PLLC announced that leading intellectual property and business litigator William M. Ragland, Jr. has joined the firm as a member. Ragland will continue his national practice in intellectual property and business litigation from the firm’s Atlanta office. His trial practice will focus on disputes related to patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secret and technology, and other complex business litigation. Ragland joins Womble Carlyle from the law firm of Hunton & Williams LLP in Atlanta, where he was a partner.

"Not only are we excited about his acclaimed skills as a litigator, we are also proud of his commitment to the bar and to the community." Ragland served as president of the Atlanta Bar Association in 2005 and currently is a member of the Executive Committee of the National Board of the Smithsonian Institution.

The firm is a litigation powerhouse, and the intellectual property practice team is strong and deep." Womble Carlyle’s IP Group has nearly doubled in size over the past few years from 35 lawyers and patent agents to approaching 70 firmwide today.

Jim Vaughan, Atlanta attorney and firmwide co-leader of the Intellectual Property Practice Group said, "Bill has extensive lead trial counsel experience in patent litigation, and in other IP disputes. He will be an excellent addition to our senior trial team for IP cases and other complex litigation." Vaughan added, "His work in patent licensing and enforcement programs and with IP structured finance companies is groundbreaking. Bill will provide significant leadership and skills in all of these areas."

Ragland's clients have included numerous computer/software, telecommunications and other high technology companies, pharmaceutical, biotechnology and life sciences companies, major paper products, chemical and manufacturing companies, financial institutions, as well as major record, music and entertainment companies and well known entertainers. He has been featured in Corporate Counsel magazine, IP Law & Business magazine and Business to Business magazine regarding leaders in innovative intellectual property enforcement and licensing programs. He also has been featured in "Big Deals" in IP Law & Business regarding his representation in license agreements with major technology companies.

Ragland is well-known for his leadership in the bar and service in the legal community. He has served as President of the Atlanta Bar Association, the largest voluntary bar association in the Southeast with over 6,200 members. He is the co-founder and Immediate Past Co-Chair of the Intellectual Property Section of the Atlanta Bar Association, and served as Co-Chair of the Memorial Fund for families of the victims of the March 11, 2005 Fulton County, Georgia Courthouse shootings.

Ragland currently serves on the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia. He was selected by the judges of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia to serve as a Board Director of the U.S. District Court Federal Defender Program, as a Member of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia Bar Council, and as a Member of that Court's Disciplinary Committee. He also is a past member of the Planning Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States for the Eleventh Circuit, and a current Master of the Bench and former Barrister of the Logan E. Bleckley American Inn of Court. Ragland is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a Charter Lifetime Fellow of the Atlanta Bar Foundation.

Ragland is also a recognized civic and community leader. He serves on the National Board of the Smithsonian Institution, where he also is a member of the Executive Committee and Co-Chair of the National Board’s Smithsonian Across America Committee. Encompassing 19 museums, the National Zoo and 9 research centers around the world, the Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum and research complex.

He presently serves as a Foundation Trustee of the Atlanta Youth Academy, a Pre-K through 8th grade school for underprivileged, inner-city children. Ragland was a member of Class of 2007 of Leadership Atlanta.

He has been consistently recognized as a Leading Lawyer by Chambers USA Client Guide, a Georgia "Super Lawyer" by Atlanta and Law & Politics magazines (Top 100 Lawyers in Georgia), one of Georgia’s "Legal Elite" by Georgia Trend magazine, and one of the "Best Lawyers in America" in the fields of Intellectual Property and Business Litigation.

Ragland earned his J.D. from University of Virginia School of Law and his A.B. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Eta Sigma.
