Dexterra Issued Patent for Innovative Technology to Seamlessly Move Data to Mobile Devices

Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Bothell, WA -- Dexterra Inc., a leading provider of software to automate and manage mobile workforces, announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued U.S. patent number 7,366,460 to Dexterra for the unique way it seamlessly moves data from back-office systems to distributed mobile devices. By incorporating this patented innovation, the Dexterra Concert mobility platform simplifies the creation and management of mobile applications integrated with one or more back-office systems, speeding business data to mobile workers while reducing IT costs for enterprises and wireless carriers.

Traditional mobile platforms require enterprise data to be replicated and maintained in an interim data store prior to being synchronized with mobile devices. This replication complicates the sharing of data between mobile applications and back-office systems, causing fragile integrations that are difficult to maintain and break whenever changes are made to back-office systems.

Dexterra's patented innovation solves the integration problem by providing a layer of abstraction between back-office systems and mobile applications. Using this layer, mobile data can be defined as rules and objects, allowing it to move seamlessly through the Dexterra Concert platform without being synchronized, staged or replicated.

"Dexterra Concert represents a breakthrough in the design of mobility platforms," said Rob O'Farrell, executive vice president, engineering, at Dexterra, and one of the patent's named inventors. "We have designed a mobile platform architecture that allows application and business process information to be accessed, controlled, combined and deployed to mobile devices without traditional, complex synchronization methods. Using Dexterra's patented technology in Concert, wireless carriers and enterprises can quickly roll out cost-effective mobile solutions that easily propagate changes to the back office."

Enabling Mobile Applications as a Service

Dexterra Concert's patented mechanism for moving data to mobile devices without storing it has enormous market potential for wireless carriers that want to offer mobile applications as services to their end customers. In the past, offering business applications required wireless carriers to store their customers' business data, a responsibility that substantially raised carriers' IT and network infrastructure costs.

By leveraging the patented technology in Dexterra's Concert platform, however, wireless carriers can now control access to their customers' business data without having to store it. Dexterra Concert functions like a switch, allowing wireless carriers to turn mobile applications on and off as transient business data moves across the network and is deployed to customers' mobile devices. This capability enables wireless carriers to deliver highly reliable applications as a service, increasing their profit margins while decreasing their TCO for mobile computing.

When changes occur in one or more back-office systems, Dexterra's layer of abstraction enables system administrators to easily modify the form of the transient data. This gives wireless carriers and enterprises the freedom to upgrade or migrate their back-office systems without rewriting the software for their mobile applications.

Dexterra Concert's patented architecture also enables mobile applications to simultaneously connect to multiple data sources, including CRM and ERP systems, in real time. The ability to pull data from multiple sources enables the development of composite applications based on configurable business rules. Using composite applications, wireless carriers and enterprises can deploy sophisticated mobile solutions that map closely to their actual business processes, increasing the efficiency and productivity of their mobile workers.

In addition to integrating with multiple back-office systems, applications built on the Dexterra Concert platform work on many popular mobile devices running Windows Mobile, RIM Blackberry, Nokia Symbian, and Apple iPhone operating systems.
