Patent to Allow Authorized Access to Company Servers by Remote Users Issued to TCS

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Invention Assists in Secure Retrieval by Mobile Devices of Data Behind Firewalls

Annapolis, MD -- TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS), a leading provider of mission-critical wireless communications, today announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued patent number 7,418,498 for "A System And Method to Publish Information from Servers to Remote Monitor Devices."

This TCS invention allows a remote device to access authorized servers and content. The authorized information can then be delivered to the remote device as an XML page and be viewed using a standard web browser. Different access levels can be established as to the specific remote user, and what information can be accessed from behind a firewall. A 2008 study of the mobile enterprise market by Frost and Sullivan found that security was rated the most important issue for enterprises when deciding upon a mobile enterprise solution.

"Web servers that can authorize mobile users and deliver requested content to these users are a critical opportunity to enhance the functionality of any enterprise or government IT infrastructure," said Drew Morin, Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer for TCS. "As more and more workers are mobile or remote, this invention increasingly becomes important as it allows controlled access to internal enterprise information."

This latest patent is a continuation of an earlier TCS issued patent 7,024,474. TCS now holds 60 patents with 194 applications pending.

About The Invention

The "A System And Method to Publish Information from Servers to Remote Monitor Devices" patent describes a method for a web server to monitor which servers are available to a mobile device or remote workstation, and sends the mobile device or workstation the list of available servers. The mobile device or remote workstation can request information from the web server and receive the dynamically generated information as an XML page that can be viewed using a standard web browser.
