Mobile Satellite Ventures Awarded Multiple Patents For Its Next-Generation Satellite-Terrestrial Communications Network

Thursday, October 09, 2008

Enhanced Global Positioning Capabilities and Reduced Signals Interference Techniques are the Latest Technology Breakthroughs for MSV

Reston, VA -- Mobile Satellite Ventures (MSV) today announced that it has been awarded multiple patents by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

U.S. Patent 7,421,342 B2 entitled "Network-Assisted Global Positioning Systems, Methods and Terminals including Doppler Shift and Code Phase Estimates" improves the efficiency of Global Positioning System (GPS) capabilities when using future hybrid satellite-terrestrial phones and devices.

According to the patent’s inventor, Gary G. Churan, director of Systems Analysis and Optimization for MSV, "This technique will reduce the computing complexity and processing time it takes to receive an accurate GPS location when using a satellite-terrestrial phone, similar to the devices that will use MSV’s emerging ancillary terrestrial component (ATC) technology."

In a related technology approval, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office also awarded to MSV U.S. Patent 7,418,263 B2, "Systems and Methods for Handover Between Space Based and Terrestrial Radioterminal Communications". This patent entails methods of monitoring and measuring transmission power and signals that enable communications over integrated satellite-terrestrial networks, thus reducing or eliminating co-frequency interference. "The co-frequency monitoring and interference reduction or elimination capabilities awarded to MSV with this patent are essential for the successful development and launch of the company’s next-generation integrated satellite-terrestrial services," noted patent co-developer Santanu Dutta, vice president of Systems Engineering for MSV.

MSV is Redefining Wireless Communications™ through its development of a hybrid satellite-terrestrial communications network, based on MSV’s patented ancillary terrestrial component (ATC) technology. The company expects its next-generation network will provide seamless, transparent and ubiquitous wireless coverage of the United States and Canada to conventional handsets. MSV plans to launch two of the most powerful commercial satellites ever built that will enable this network to support communications in a variety of market segments including public safety, homeland security, aviation, transportation and entertainment, by providing a platform for interoperable, user-friendly and feature-rich voice and high-speed data services.

Mobile Satellite Ventures is a joint venture between Mobile Satellite Ventures LP and Mobile Satellite Ventures (Canada) Inc. MSVLP is owned and controlled by SkyTerra Communications, Inc. (OTCBB:SKYT).
