Dot Hill Awarded Patent for Software Boosting System Data Availability

Thursday, March 01, 2007

Carlsbad, CA -- Dot Hill Systems Corp. (Nasdaq: HILL) , a market leader in providing flexible storage offerings and responsive service and support to OEMs and system integrators (SIs), today announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted the company U.S. patent 7,146,448 "Apparatus and method for adopting an orphan I/O port in a redundant storage controller."

The patent pertains to the company's unique technology in which a surviving storage controller detects failure of a redundant controller and automatically configures its own I/O ports to service the I/O requests previously managed by the failed storage controller. Through this process, the data traffic proceeds without interruption while avoiding reboot of any storage systems previously in communication with the failed controller.

This unique technology was developed by Dot Hill's engineering team at the company's Longmont, Colo. technology center. The invention is part of Dot Hill's growing patent portfolio which enables the company to continue to provide innovative products to a growing list of OEM customers.

"Dot Hill continues to invest in research and development that brings innovative technology solutions to the forefront while delivering new levels of storage system performance and scalability," said Jim Kuenzel, senior vice president of engineering, Dot Hill. "This software enhancement will enable our OEM partners to address mission-critical storage system requirements such as zero-downtime and higher system performance."
