Second Edition of Greenberg Traurig Attorney Ian C. Ballon’s Seminal 4-Volume Internet Law Treatise Just Published

Thursday, February 05, 2009

Palo Alto & Los Angeles, CA – Ian Ballon, a shareholder in the Intellectual Property and Technology Litigation Group of Greenberg Traurig LLP has released a new, completely updated second edition of his legal treatise, E-Commerce and Internet Law: Treatise With Forms, 2d.

Ballon’s treatise, published by Thomson/West, has been a leading Internet law treatise since it was first published eight years ago. As with the first edition, the new second edition contains the detail and in-depth analysis that is typical of a major legal treatise, along with practical tips and suggestions, checklists and forms, which make the work very practical and useful to both experienced e-commerce lawyers and novices. In the words of Matthew Polesetsky, Senior Vice President, Business and Legal Affairs of Demand Media, Inc. and the former General Counsel of MySpace, Inc., "Ian Ballon wrings clarity from complexity, and illuminates the principles driving future developments in the law."

Unlike most treatises, Ballon’s treatise adopts the intuitive research structure of the Web, rather than using old fashioned indexes. As explained in a section entitled "How to Use this Work," readers are encouraged to start by reviewing the detailed chapter list, which like the Web, leads to extensively cross referenced sections and subsections so that wherever a reader starts his or her search they will be linked back to the specific section that answers their questions.

Three attorneys from Greenberg Traurig’s Intellectual Property and Technology Practice also contributed to the 4-volume set. Alan N. Sutin, Chair of the firm’s Global Intellectual Property and Technology practice wrote the chapter on gambling and section on online contests and promotions. Charmaine Williams, an entertainment law shareholder in the Atlanta office, authored a chapter on music licensing, and Helen Christakos, an associate in the Silicon Valley office co-authored with Ballon a checklist on child safety on social networks and several of the forms included in the work.

Ballon represents technology, media and entertainment companies in complex Internet, copyright, and intellectual property litigation and counseling. Most recently, Ballon and MySpace have been recognized as the third largest Plaintiff's Verdict in California for 2008 in the Los Angeles Daily Journal’s special supplement, Top Plaintiffs' Verdicts (January 2009). He was named one of the top 100 lawyers in California in 2008 by the Los Angeles Daily Journal and San Francisco Daily Journal and has been named one of the top new media lawyers in the United States by CyberEsq. magazine, one of the 100 most influential lawyers in California by California Law Business, one of the top 50 IP Litigators in California and one of the top 25 copyright, trademark and patent lawyers in California by The Daily Journal. Ballon is listed in the 2008 and 2007 editions of The Best Lawyers in America in the areas of intellectual property and information technology and is included as one of the world's leading lawyers in the 2007, 2006 and 2005 editions of Technology, Media and Telecommunications Expert Guides and in the 2008 edition of Chambers and Partners USA Guide in the areas of copyright litigation and privacy and data security. He previously served as an Advisor to the American Law Institute's International Intellectual Property Jurisdiction Project and currently is a member of the GRAMMY® Foundation's Entertainment Law Initiative Advisory Committee.
