Fulbright Grows Global Intellectual Property Practice
Thursday, February 12, 2009
Minneapolis, MN -- A patent lawyer with a Ph.D. in organic chemistry known for his patent prosecution work for chemical inventions has joined Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P.
Scott D. Rothenberger joins Fulbright’s Minneapolis office as a partner from Dorsey & Whitney L.L.P. along with Colin Fairman, a senior associate.
"Scott offers an impressive array of experience in complex patent prosecution, licensing and counseling," said Steven B. Pfeiffer, the Chair of Fulbright’s Executive Committee. "His background nicely complements our solid team of intellectual property lawyers who provide tailored, sophisticated service to our clients worldwide."
Fulbright’s experienced Intellectual Property and Technology practice group encompasses one of the largest concentrations of intellectual property lawyers in the country. The team vigorously protects clients’ copyrights, patents, trade secrets, trademarks and related interests.
In 2008, Chambers & Partners Global and Chambers & Partners USA ranked Fulbright as one of the nation’s leading law firms for intellectual property work saying the firm’s "strengths in patent prosecution and its work for universities and biotech companies particularly catch the eye of interviewees, as does its IP litigation prowess."
"We bring together knowledge of the legal landscape and the industries our clients operate within each day," said Jim Repass, the co-head of Fulbright’s global intellectual property practice. "Through understanding our clients’ businesses, we know how to keep them at the cutting edge. Scott brings the right mix of technical know-how and trial experience to our team."
Fulbright’s experience and reputation grabbed Rothenberger’s attention, he said.
"Fulbright’s highly-regarded intellectual property practice and the firm’s dedication to client service appealed to me," Rothenberger said. "It is great to be a part of such a diverse, highly-skilled team of IP lawyers who have a deep appreciation for their work and are focused on providing value to clients from a global platform of offices."
Rothenberger brings valuable experience in preparation and prosecution of patent applications in a variety of science arts including chemical, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, nonwovens, membranes, surface modification, polymer and biomedical. He also provides technical and legal support to clients on litigation issues and provides patentability, due diligence, infringement and validity options in addition to a significant amount of IP transactional work.
Prior to his legal career, Rothenberger worked as a research scientist and project leader at several biotechnology corporations, where he conducted membrane research and was responsible for the development and application of hydrophilic, ozone resistant and positively charged membranes for use in proteins.
Fairman, who has a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences and broad experience in biological and chemical inventions, primarily handles biotechnology and nanotechnology work and has handled patent prosecution matters.
"Scott brings more than a decade of chemical IP experience and hands-on industry experience at various biotechnology corporations while Colin’s background as a research scientist and chemist allows him, like Scott, to offer clients a first-hand understanding of the work they do each day," said Ronn Kreps, the head of Fulbright’s Minneapolis office. "Scott’s and Colin’s broad experience and successful track record make them an ideal fit as our IP presence in Minnesota continues to expand."
