Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Richard Young and Nicole Murray to Expand Intellectual Property Practice

Chicago, IL -- The national law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP is pleased to announce that Richard W. Young has joined its Chicago office as a partner in the Intellectual Property practice. Mr. Young brings 25 years of experience counseling clients on intellectual property issues and litigating patent, trademark and copyright actions in federal trial and appellate courts around the country.

Prior to joining Quarles & Brady, Mr. Young practiced for 20 years at Gardner Carton & Douglas, now Drinker Biddle & Reath, in Chicago and served as Chairman of the Intellectual Property Department for eight of those years. He joins the firm along with Nicole Murray, also formerly of Gardner Carton & Douglas, and now an associate in Quarles & Brady’s Intellectual Property practice in Chicago.

Their arrival represents the latest significant addition to the Chicago office in recent months as the firm’s platform continues to attract distinguished attorneys from across the country to this strategic growth market. The firm has already added seven attorneys to the Chicago office this year and now has approximately 70 lawyers on the ground in Chicago.

"Our strategy has long been to build from our strengths and focus on growth in our strategic markets and nationally recognized practice areas," said John W. Daniels, Chairman of Quarles & Brady. "We look forward to the contributions Rick and Nikki will make in expanding our capabilities for clients as we continue to grow in the Chicago market."

Mr. Young has extensive experience in intellectual property litigation and in counseling clients on intellectual property issues, including infringement, licensing and branding. He represents companies in a broad range of industries, including advertising, publishing and manufacturing, and assists clients in the acquisition, protection and exploitation of their intellectual property around the world.

"Along with the recent addition of Thomas Stiebel, Rick and Nikki will significantly strengthen our Intellectual Property practice," said Jean Baker, chair of the firm's national Intellectual Property practice. "Their significant experience in IP counseling and litigation will be an invaluable resource to our clients."

Mr. Young received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Yale University in 1978 and a J.D. from Indiana University Bloomington School of Law in 1981. He is a member of the American Bar Association, International Trademark Association, Pharmaceutical Trade Marks Group, Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago, American Intellectual Property Law Association and Lawyers for the Creative Arts.

Ms. Murray focuses her practice on intellectual property litigation as well as trademark and copyright counseling. She has experience in federal trial and appellate courts and has counseled clients in a wide variety of industries, including the consumer products, financial and pharmaceuticals industries. She received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University in 1998 and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2002.

Quarles & Brady first opened its Chicago office in 1999 with the acquisition of Wilson & McIlvaine, a 28-lawyer Chicago firm, and has since grown to approximately 70 lawyers. To accommodate this growth, in late March, the firm will move into 75,000 square feet of office space in a new Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold-designed skyscraper. Located at 300 N. LaSalle, this new space will allow the firm to expand to as many as 110 attorneys in Chicago.

Quarles & Brady LLP is a full-service law firm with more than 450 attorneys practicing from offices in Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz.; Chicago, Ill.; Naples, Fla.; and Milwaukee and Madison, Wis. The firm offers an array of legal services to corporate and individual clients that range from small entrepreneurial businesses to Fortune 100 companies.
