Nutter McClennen & Fish Expands IP Practice

Penny brings international experience to established IP practice

Boston, MA – Nutter McClennen & Fish announced today that John J. Penny, V has joined the firm as a partner in the Intellectual Property practice. Penny, a registered patent attorney, focuses on the development of strategic patent portfolios, the preparation of opinions concerning infringement, validity, unenforceability and patentability, and patent litigation in the mechanical, electrical and electro-mechanical arts. Penny also has extensive experience conducting reexaminations and appeals at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. His clients include electronic and manufacturing companies from Japan, U.S., Europe and other Asian countries.

Prior to Nutter, Penny represented large national and international electronic and manufacturing companies in the technical areas of imaging technology, automotive technology, semiconductors, wireless communication, radar technology, aircraft technology, medical devices, computer hardware and software, and heavy machinery. Prior to joining Nutter, Penny worked at large international law firms in Boston and Washington D.C. Penny also worked as in-house patent counsel for Seiko Epson in Nagano, Japan for two years. Penny lectures extensively on all aspects of patent law to various intellectual property groups and organizations in Japan and Asia.

Penny received a J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law, an M.S.M.E. from the University of Southern California, and a B.S.M.E. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
