Michigan-based law firm steadily grows as cost-effective West Coast IP legal counsel

Los Angeles, CA -- To further strengthen its West Coast presence, Brooks Kushman P.C., a leading intellectual property (IP) and technology law firm, hired William E. Thomson Jr. as a partner. He will be based at the firm’s L.A. office and will help expand the firm’s California IP litigation and patent practice, particularly in the life sciences.

Most recently, Thomson was a partner at Hogan & Hartson LLP in L.A., where his practice covered a range of IP matters with principal emphasis on litigation, counseling and technology transfer in the pharmaceutical, biotech, chemical and computer technology arenas.

Notably, Thomson also has a distinguished record of civic service. He served as the Mayor of Pasadena, Calif. from 1988 to 1990 and as a member of the Pasadena City Council from 1981 to 1997. Thomson led Pasadena’s successful efforts to secure a number of major events for the Rose Bowl, including the 1984 Olympics, the 1987 and 1993 Super Bowls, and the 1994 World Cup. Presently, he is an elected trustee of the Board of Trustees of Pasadena City College.

"Bill’s appointment highlights the recent success of our Los Angeles practice," said Mark A. Cantor, president, Brooks Kushman. "His extensive expertise in IP law, specifically his broad and extensive litigation background, will help strengthen the practice as a whole and continue driving the strategic growth and success of our West Coast office."

According to Cantor, the success of Brooks Kushman’s West Coast office is due not only to the large and growing market, but also to Brooks Kushman’s favorable Midwest billing rates. On average, Brooks Kushman’s rates are on the order of 2/3rds of its L.A. competitors.

Founded in 1983 by five intellectual property (IP) attorneys, Brooks Kushman P.C. is a leading IP and commercial law firm based in Southfield, Mich. with an office in Los Angeles. Since its inception, the firm has grown to approximately 70 lawyers and patent agents, gaining a reputation both nationally and internationally as a leader in providing cutting-edge, timely and cost-effective IP counseling.

Brooks Kushman helps to protect the IP of America’s most innovative companies and counts four U.S. Fortune 100 companies among its clients. Often recognized by peers and leading trade publications, Brooks Kushman has been named a Go-To Law Firm® by the top 500 companies, according to Corporate Counsel magazine and a "Best at Client Focus" firm, according to large and Fortune 1000 companies surveyed by The BTI Consulting Group.
