Telvent DTN Awarded U.S. Patent on Configurable Weather Alerting Technology

Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Customer-defined Weather Notification Capability, Exclusive to Telvent, Optimizes Value of Alerts and Support for Businesses

Rockville, MD -- Telvent (Nasdaq: TLVT), the IT company for a sustainable and secure world, announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark office has awarded Telvent DTN a patent recognizing its unique and configurable weather alerting technology. This flexible application provides automated notification of weather impacts based on subscriber-defined parameters. With it, customers get precisely the weather alerts each needs to make the best operational decisions for its business.

With this patent award (U.S. Patent No. 7,602,285), Telvent DTN is the only provider offering customers the ability to uniquely define the types of weather alert each requires, including specific weather parameters, significant hazard thresholds, and precise geographical areas of interest. This exclusive customer-configured alert service can be applied to stationary or mobile assets and is available 24 hours a day, making it a powerful business asset -- especially for aviation, energy wind farms, ground transportation, public services and utilities.

For example, an air ambulance service relying on Telvent DTN's agile weather alert service could receive a real-time wind warning for not only the current location of each of its in-flight assets but also for the flight plan of the helicopter. Travel Information Systems now can receive road-segment alerts of hazardous driving conditions. Meanwhile a wind farm operator can safely evacuate workers from a wind turbine in advance of a dangerous lightning strike, based on the advance alert. And the electric power transmission authority can receive customized alerts for discrete sections of transmission lines, using weather information to empower the new Smart Grid that leads to better decisions, fewer outages, and faster restoration after a storm.

"Yes, we are excited about this patent award," affirmed Manuel Sanchez, Telvent Chairman and CEO. "Telvent continues to focus on delivering cutting-edge technology that supports information management efficiency, which ultimately supports sustainability. This patent award reflects our role as a leader in technology innovation."

Telvent DTN has been advancing the production and delivery of news and information since 1984. Today, it is one of the most trusted providers of timely and accurate business information.
