Ropes & Gray Continues Global Expansion with the Addition of Maxwell A. Fox in Tokyo
Thursday, January 14, 2010
Tokyo -- Ropes & Gray today announced that Maxwell A. Fox has joined the firm as a partner in the Tokyo office and member of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group. With the official opening last week of Ropes & Gray’s London office and the addition of Mr. Fox, Ropes & Gray continues to expand its global presence to serve the firm’s increasing international client base.
Mr. Fox is a valuable addition to Ropes & Gray’s IP Group, which is recognized as a global leader in the field. In December 2009, IP World presented Ropes & Gray with the "World Leader" award for excellence in patent practice and litigation in the Asia Pacific region, the second consecutive year the firm has received this top honor. In addition, the firm received the 2009 ALB Japan Award for "Technology, Media and Telecommunications Deal of the Year."
Formerly co-head of litigation in Paul Hastings’ Tokyo office, Mr. Fox will continue to focus his practice on complex intellectual property litigation, licensing and counseling. Mr. Fox has represented a wide range of technology companies in complex patent disputes and other intellectual property infringement litigation. He also advises clients on matters involving the licensing of patents and other intellectual property. His clients have included leading manufacturers and distributors of electronic hardware, semiconductors, TFT LCD displays, memory devices, video games, notebook computers, television, DVD-ROMs, scanners and sports equipment.
"We are delighted to welcome Mac to our firm and to the Tokyo office," said Jim DeGraw, a partner located in Ropes & Gray’s Tokyo office. "Having practiced in Tokyo for over three years, Mac has established himself as a leading IP practitioner advising clients in Japan and in other parts of Asia. He is an accomplished litigator who brings a tremendous range of skills and experiences that will contribute significantly to our ability to serve a variety of clients in a region of great importance to the firm’s strategic growth."
The addition of Mr. Fox expands Ropes & Gray’s IP capabilities in Asia. The firm’s Tokyo office, which opened in October 2007, now has 12 attorneys focusing on intellectual property, litigation and private equity, serving clients in Asia and elsewhere.
"It is a tremendous honor to be joining Ropes & Gray which enjoys such an outstanding reputation in Tokyo as well as globally," said Mr. Fox. "The extensive bench strength of the IP Group and the world-class legal resources offered by others at the firm were significant factors in my decision to move to Ropes & Gray."
Mr. Fox, who is a native English speaker and fluent in Japanese, received his A.B., cum laude, from Dartmouth College and his J.D. from Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California, Berkeley, where he was a member of the Berkeley Journal of International Law and the Berkeley Technology Law Journal.
