Christie, Parker & Hale Obtains an Important Patent for Smart Cars

Monday, February 08, 2010

Pasadena, CA -- Christie, Parker & Hale LLP, one of Southern California’s leading intellectual property law firms, announced today that the firm was instrumental in a major patent issuance for its client, Kapsch TrafficCom Inc., an international supplier of innovative road traffic telematics solutions.

U.S. Pat. No. 7,639,159 pertains to a method and system for automatically determining right of way for "smart cars," or cars equipped with "smart" mobile units, at an intersection. The method and system include collecting position and movement information about a number of "smart" mobile units approaching an intersection, and delivers automated determination and dissemination of right-of-way information. The right-of-way indicator may prove beneficial in reducing the large number of collisions that occur annually.

"We are pleased to have played a significant role in the issuance of this patent for our client," commented Raymond R. Tabandeh, the CPH partner who prosecuted the patent application. "The technology allows for 'smart cars' to access information about the geometry of a traffic signal intersection and to calculate the right of way when multiple vehicles approach an intersection. Intersection-related crashes constitute a large percentage of all car crashes," Tabandeh added.

"The issuance of this important patent exemplifies our extensive efforts toward integrating communication and computing technologies into motor vehicles to improve the safety and efficiency of roadways," stated Justin McNew, CTO of Kapsch TrafficCom. "Kapsch is an ongoing contributor to the U.S. Department of Transportation (US DOT) Intelligent Transportation Systems program, and this patent demonstrates our commitment to the US DOT ITS IntelliDrive Program and our focus on the development and commercialization of end-to-end solutions for safety and congestion management," added McNew.
