inthinc Awarded Patent on Technology to Reduce Distracted Driving
Monday, January 31, 2011
Salt Lake City, UT -- inthinc Technology Solutions Inc. (www.inthinc.com), a company focused on telematics, fleet management solutions and driving safety, today announced it has been awarded a patent covering driving safety technology related to cell phone and text detection. As part of the company’s initiative to make a significant impact in reducing distracted driving, the patent covers technology that detects cell phone usage while a vehicle is in motion and coaches the driver to refrain from using a cell phone while driving.
inthinc’s driving safety solutions currently notify drivers—in real time—of unsafe driving behavior such as speeding, hard braking, hard turning and other aggressive driving activities. This distracted driving prevention technology will be the next inthinc product advancement, offering innovative approaches to combat distracted driving:
- Actively warning drivers (in real time) to stop using their phone while driving; or
- Providing vehicle owners or commercial fleet managers with web-based reports of cell phone use and texting-while-driving activity, by combining vehicle operation data (telematics) and call data records.
The distracted driving prevention features are slated to be added to the inthinc offering later this year.
“Our goal is to reduce risky driving behavior by developing technologies that change driver behavior,” said Todd Follmer, CEO of inthinc Technology Solutions Inc. “If we can improve driver behavior, we can eliminate some of the tragic outcomes related to aggressive or distracted driving.”
In addition, inthinc was awarded a patent covering technology that is used for identifying—among other things—vehicles exceeding the posted speed limit. This technology is currently used as part of inthinc products waySmart, tiwiPro and tiwiFamily. inthinc’s products coach drivers by giving verbal warnings in real time when they exceed posted speed limits. Through inthinc technology, speeding violations have dropped an average of 90 percent across the company’s customer base.
These patents bring the company’s total patents to more than 30, including both granted and pending U.S. and foreign patents.
