Biscom Awarded Patent for File Size Reduction of Scanned Color Documents with Black & White Areas
Thursday, May 10, 2012
Chelmsford, MA -- On May 1, 2012, Biscom, Inc., the leading provider of enterprise fax servers, hosted cloud fax services, and secure file transfer solutions, was awarded patent # US 8,169,661 B2 for its invention of a scanning system for color and black & white information on documents and pages scanned in full color. This is the sixth patent awarded to Biscom, and is in addition to multiple patents pending.
Traditionally, color scanning results in large files at 24-bits-per-pixel prior to sending and/or storage. Biscom's method revolutionizes the process. After full 24-bit-per-pixel color scanning, the black & white wording and/or images are then selectively identified and downsized to a single-bit-per-pixel value. This method preserves the original printed information, while retaining the accuracy and integrity of the characters forming the colored text and illustrated portions of the scanned pages in their original 24-bit-per-pixel format. Benefits of this new method include:
- Significantly reduced file sizes for mixed color and black & white documents
- Black & white-only images or black & white/color mixed documents are converted back to their natural black & white 1-bit-per-pixel image
The new scanning system can be used with optical color scanning systems in Multi-Functional Peripherals (MFPs), and has initially been integrated into Biscom's High Definition-Internet Protocol (HD-IPFax) color fax products to reduce file sizes. Biscom HD-IPFax is a direct method for transmitting high definition and color documents on a "push" basis. It's a proven solution for direct delivery or remote document printing over an encrypted IP connection, greatly surpassing the security, speed, and image quality of traditional fax, fax-over-IP, and email systems. HD-IPFax can operate on its own, or extend Biscom's fax server and hosted fax cloud solutions. Central to this patent-pending technology is Biscom's IPFax Switch software, available either as a cloud-based or on-premises solution.
Companies that stand to benefit from this scanning system include MFP and workgroup scanning vendors and enterprises wishing to decrease storage and/or enhance network bandwidth usage.
Founded in 1986, Biscom, headquartered in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, pioneered the fax server and hosted on-demand cloud fax marketplaces. As the industry's recognized innovation and customer service leader, Biscom has provided many of the world's largest healthcare, financial, government, services, and legal enterprises with secure communications solutions, most notably its award-winning enterprise FAXCOM Server and FAXCOM Anywhere hosted cloud enterprise fax solutions, HD-IPFax color fax, and Biscom Delivery Server secure file transfer products.
