Tuesday, July 31, 2007

James T. Canfield and James J. Wong Join Palo Alto, California Office

Palo Alto, CA -- Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP, one of the world’s largest intellectual property law firms, announced today that James T. Canfield and James J. Wong have joined the firm’s Palo Alto, California office. Mr. Canfield, whose background is focused on patent litigation at the trial and appellate levels, and Mr. Wong, who has served as senior patent counsel at several biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, expand the attorney ranks of the Silicon Valley office to its highest level since opening in 1997.

Prior to joining Finnegan Henderson, Mr. Canfield was Counsel at Ropes & Gray’s Fish & Neave IP Group. He has provided written advocacy in more than forty patent-related cases involving a wide range of products such as integrated-circuit sockets, intravenous catheters, and waste-water filtration systems. A prolific writer with an M.F.A. in screenwriting, Mr. Canfield has authored chapters in bar association publications and has ghostwritten chapters for patent publications, including a leading law school casebook and a training text for teaching new judges about patent law.

Mr. Wong most recently served as Director, Intellectual Property at Gilead Sciences, where he was responsible for providing patent strategy guidance, trademark portfolio management, and collaborating with the company’s regulatory group on FDA submissions directed to Orange Book patent listings. Over the course of his seventeen-year career as a pharmaceutical patent attorney with a technical background in small organic molecules, he has amassed significant corporate experience working on IP matters with regulatory, commercial, and manufacturing teams in both in-house and outside counsel capacities.

Jean Burke Fordis, the managing partner in Palo Alto, noted that the additions are part of the office’s long-term growth strategy. "We welcome the diverse experiences and backgrounds of these talented senior IP practitioners, who will not only enrich the services we provide to our clients, but also serve as valuable resources for training and mentoring our younger professionals," commented Ms. Fordis. The firm’s Palo Alto office currently has thirty-six attorneys, five student associates, and two technical specialists.
