Wednesday, August 08, 2007

Company Adds to Its Growing IP Portfolio with New Patent Grant for Secure Seamless Mobility Used in Its Leading QuickLink Mobility Suite

Aliso Viejo, CA -- Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI), a leading developer and marketer of innovative software solutions and services for the wireless market, announced today that it was issued U.S. Patent No. 7,213,263, "System and Method for Secure Network Mobility" by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The 7,213,263 patent covers methods for providing mobile workers the ability to maintain continuous secure communication sessions between a mobile users’ device and their home network information resources. The award of this patent boosts Smith Micro’s technology edge by enabling seamless roaming across wireless and IP based networks, combined with security to provide access to critical applications and data. Adding this technology into Smith Micro’s suite of connection manager and mobile VPN products, delivers a key requirement for continued acceleration of wireless data and mobility deployments.

"We are continually developing our intellectual property portfolio with a focus on security solutions to expand our leadership in the wireless software market," said David Sperling, CTO of Smith Micro Software, Inc. "Mobile IP and IP Security protocols have rarely been considered jointly to address secure IP mobility issues. In particular, the IP Security protocol does not work well through such devices as firewalls or NAT gateways, which are commonly being used as a means to protect private network space and to overcome public IP shortages. Not only does this invention provide a system and method for secure IP mobility, which allows wireless users to securely access their home network resource, even through firewalls and NAT gateways, but also offers administrators flexible configurations to accommodate heterogeneous communications by users from any location at any time."

Enabling technologies such as broadband mobile networks are allowing mobile workers to easily gain access to their enterprise resources and this invention enables continuous network security and seamless mobility for today’s enterprise customers who need to ensure that appropriate employees have secure, but always on access to their network without hindering business productivity.

QuickLink Mobility is Smith Micro’s suite of client/server mobility products which includes a unified wireless network connection manager and a mobile gateway network with endpoint security and policy management tools.
