Datalight Receives Patent for Groundbreaking Reliance Technology
Thursday, August 09, 2007
Santa Clara, CA -- (Flash Memory Summit) Datalight, Inc. announced today that the United States Patent and Trademark office has approved a patent for the company's pioneering file system technology, sold under the product name Datalight Reliance™. Reliance eliminates data corruption by changing the way data is stored on embedded devices, such as cell phones, cameras, PDA's and industrial equipment. The technology also significantly improves the performance and life of NAND and NOR flash memory-based electronics.
"Our innovation in reliable file systems has been recognized by the patent office," said Roy Sherrill, president of Datalight. "We have seen strong adoption of this technology from device manufacturers. With consumers' lives becoming more dependent on their data, they demand 100% reliability from their devices. Data reliability comes from using a file system that eliminates the risk of corruption and Reliance gives device manufacturers the confidence to meet these demands."
For years traditional File Allocation Table (FAT)-based file systems have caused problems for device designers and users. Originally designed for desktop computers, they are easily corrupted and slow to repair after a device loses power. A FAT file system is not rugged enough for the brutal, battery-powered environment of embedded devices. The common work-around of adding journaling or logging to track changes improves reliability, but decreases performance and does not safeguard the user's data. Reliance ensures an always-consistent disk state, so data is preserved from the last transaction point.
Reliance uses Dynamic Transaction Point™ technology to give complete control over how and when transactions are performed, allowing customization for any use case. This is achieved by writing data in "atomic" (all or nothing) transactions, which can be configured in multiple ways. Regardless which transaction model is chosen, the file system structures and file data are immune to corruption.
The Dynamic Transaction Point™ technology allows devices that use the Reliance file system to deliver peak performance. Reliance enables applications to maximize performance and guarantee reliability during data acquisition, normal system operation, application shut-down, in-field system updates and critical configuration changes. The performance benefits provide a 40% to 300% improvement over other file system methods that claim reliability.
Reliance is available from Datalight and its network of resellers worldwide. Evaluation versions are available for download at no charge simply by registering on the Datalight website.
