Perkins Coie Welcomes Sean Grygiel as Partner in IP Practice in New York

Thursday, November 13, 2014

Perkins Coie is pleased to announce that Sean J. Grygiel has joined the New York office as a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property practice with a focus on portfolio development, strategic counseling, and post-grant procedures. Sean was previously a principal with Fish & Richardson. He is the fourth partner (and fifth attorney) to join the New York office this year.

“With experience developing high-value patent assets for early-stage technology companies, and as a co-founder and COO of his own startup, Sean is particularly skilled at handling the critical issues with managing and protecting IP,” said Paul Parker, chair of Perkins Coie’s IP practice. “Sean’s innovative and entrepreneurial approach is a great fit for our practice nationally and in New York.”

Sean counsels clients on all aspects of intellectual property development, management and protection. His clients range from large corporations to startups and early-stage venture-funded companies, and he often helps them align IP portfolios with the strategic direction of business units to support valuation at key milestones. Industry sectors in which Sean has experience include medical devices, energy/alternative energy, mechanical and electrical systems, wireless and telecommunications, software and Internet services. Sean’s experience includes traditional patent and trademark preparation and prosecution, licensing, freedom-to-operate studies, product clearance opinions, post-grant procedures and litigation support. Sean has helped many businesses bring their early-stage technologies and products to market, and his tactical counsel helps clients align IP portfolio development plans with business plans.

“Sean is a great addition to our IP practice here in New York,” said Schuyler Carroll, Office Managing Partner of Perkins Coie’s New York office. “His extensive representation of sophisticated clients in high-growth areas will be very beneficial to both our Silicon Alley and Silicon Valley clients. Sean’s expertise in providing high level, complex strategy advice to clients on IP matters also fits well with our existing client work in the financial services and technology areas.”

Sean received his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School where he was a member of the Public Contract Law Journal and earned his bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the United States Coast Guard Academy.
