Patent Litigator Johnny Kumar Joins Mayer Brown as partner in Washington, DC Office

Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that prominent patent litigator Johnny A. Kumar has joined the firm as a partner in its Intellectual Property practice in Washington, DC. Previously, he was a partner with Winston & Strawn.

Mr. Kumar has more than 20 years of experience as a patent attorney, particularly in the fields of electronics and computer technology. He litigates patent-related disputes in federal courts throughout the United States and before the US Patent and Trademark office and also counsels clients regarding: US patent procurement and worldwide management of patent prosecution; patent reissue, reexamination and interference proceedings; patent infringement, validity, and clearance opinions; patent and trade secret audits and due diligence studies; and patent and trade secret enforcement. Prior to pursuing a law career, he was an electronics design engineer at IBM and General Electric for more than eight years.

Mr. Kumar also advises clients on patent management issues to develop strategies to realize value from their patents in a particular technology/industry through patent portfolio development, patent mining, and patent portfolio licensing. He manages patents in a range of fields that includes analog circuits, digital circuits, semiconductors, telecommunications, wireless communications, computer hardware and software, mechanical and electromechanical systems, signal processing, video games and information devices (PDAs, laptops, desktops, and cell phones). He also represents clients in the printing, automotive and energy industries, as well as companies developing software for financial services, securities and insurance purposes.

A frequent speaker at legal and industry conferences, Mr. Kumar writes extensively for trade journals and legal publications. He received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering with highest honors from the University of Texas and a J.D. degree with honors from George Mason University School of Law.
