Obsidian Holds the Key to Enterprise Class Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery -- U.S. Patent 7,843,962 Issued

Friday, December 17, 2010

Edmonton, Alberta -- Obsidian is pleased to announce that on November 30, 2010 the US Patent & Trademark Office issued Patent 7,843,962, a Method to Extend the Physical Reach of an InfiniBand Network, in harmony with the patent issued by the United Kingdom earlier this year. Owned and marketed by Obsidian under the Longbow brand this high performance network technology is patent-pending worldwide.

More than a decade ago industry leaders including IBM, Intel, Hewlett Packard, Compaq, Dell, Microsoft, and Sun joined together to develop an open standard protocol – the inter-connect of choice for High Performance clusters, supercomputers and data centers.

Today, business is out-pacing conventional network technologies leaving CIOs across all sectors struggling with the growing demands of a new era of data collection, storage and management. Increasingly, they are looking to the High Performance industry to solve very serious, very real, everyday problems:

  • Live migration of large data sets to remote content delivery sites
  • Efficient disaster recovery across regional and global distances
  • Fault tolerant “stretched” database clusters across metro area networks
  • Synchronous storage mirroring over a 50 mile range
  • Seamless Data Center expansion to nearby buildings

Essential to solving these problems is the ability to make efficient use of existing fiber optic networks and do so in a fast, secure, reliable manner. Initially developed to support global mission critical links for the US military, LongbowTM products are High Performance range extenders unmatched in this task with throughput efficiency reaching 96%+ over standard 10Gb connections as compared to less than 15% for TCP/IP. Equally dramatic is the latency advantage, measured at an order of magnitude lower, on large-scale, single streams of data with minimal jitter.

“A true game-changing technology that offers encrypted, near-perfect WAN utilization making it ideal for enterprise, Cloud or data center connections across town or around the world,” said Bill Halina, Obsidian’s Chairman & CEO. “Earning patent protection in the United States brings with it enormous opportunity and added responsibility for our young company, opening the door for strategic alliances with some of the world’s largest IT firms to help eliminate network bottlenecks caused by older less efficient technologies.”

About Obsidian Strategics

Obsidian Strategics™ is the developer of Longbow™, a series of InfiniBand products featuring range extension, routing and encryption. Longbow technology allows an InfiniBand fabric, normally a short-range network used in high-performance computing, to be extended via optical fiber over varying distances. Longbow connects across Campus, Metro or Global networks to enable unparalleled real-time backup over long-distance, high-bandwidth video transmission and efficient movement of large data sets to compute and storage resources. www.obsidianstrategics.com.
