Sandra Aistars Named Executive Director, Alliance Board Announces

Monday, December 20, 2010

WASHINGTON—The Copyright Alliance Board of Directors today named Sandra Aistars, an expert in copyright and other intellectual property law, business and policy, the organization’s Executive Director.

Aistars brings multiple attributes essential to the position, including proven management, leadership and communications skills, more than a decade of work across industries to address intellectual property and technology issues raised by digital distribution platforms, and a commitment to representing artists and creators on a pro bono basis throughout her career. She is currently Vice President and Associate General Counsel at Time Warner Inc., a role that requires mastery of intellectual property issues, federal policy process and development, and the ability to understand and manage the implications of intellectual property policies across a portfolio of businesses.

In addition, Aistars has a wealth of experience working with policy makers in Washington and internationally. She serves as an industry advisor to the Department of Commerce on intellectual property implications for international trade negotiations; collaborates with Time Warner's global public policy team on legislative and regulatory matters worldwide; frequently participates in regulatory and legislative proceedings; testifies before agencies regarding intellectual property matters; and is regularly tapped by government agencies to speak to U.S. government-sponsored study tours for visiting legislators, judges, prosecutors, and regulators.

“We couldn’t be more pleased that Sandra has agreed to take on this important role as a leader and advocate on behalf of creators of all backgrounds,” the Board stated. “In addition to her depth of knowledge on copyright issues, and her proven track record in consensus building, Sandra’s focus, energy and diplomacy will serve the Alliance’s diverse membership and its cause well.”

Aistars said, “Throughout my career, I have had unique opportunities to work across industries to protect intellectual property rights, promote free expression for creators, create new opportunities for consumers, and ensure that civic discourse, education and innovation are advanced as a result. This is a time of great opportunity and challenge for the copyright industries, and I am eager to be a voice for artists and creators all across America.”

Aistars replaces Patrick Ross, who served as Executive Director for four years and recently stepped down to return to a full-time writing career.

Aistars hails from a family of talent, which includes an opera singer, authors and painters.

“Despite my own regrettable lack of artistic talent, my life has been enriched by a host of incredibly gifted creators who have given me a great appreciation for the creative process and a recognition of its importance in our culture,” Aistars said.

She has provided pro bono legal counsel throughout her career to numerous independent artists and creators including singer-songwriters, photographers and non-profit arts organizations.

In her role at Time Warner, where she has served since 2003, Aistars coordinated the company’s intellectual property strategies; served as an expert to the U.S. Congress, the Copyright Office, and various departments and agencies; and represented the company in cross-industry coalitions and technology standards efforts. She is a frequent speaker on intellectual property and new media topics at a variety of venues.

With this move, Aistars returns to her roots in Washington, DC, where she worked for more than 12 years as a lawyer and lobbyist on intellectual property and technology issues at Weil, Gotshal & Manges, LLP, and as the head of public relations and government affairs for a non-profit organization.
