Four McAndrews, Held & Malloy Attorneys Recognized as Top Patent Prosecutors

Chicago, IL -- McAndrews, Held & Malloy attorneys Joseph M. Barich, Aaron F. Barkoff, George F. Wheelerand Christopher C. Winslade were selected for inclusion in Patent Research Review and Patent Buddy’s inaugural list of the 2011 Top Patent Prosecutors.
Honorees were selected through a nationwide nomination process designed to identify patent prosecutors who have achieved a reputation for delivering the highest quality work and counseling in patent application preparation and prosecution. The candidates were then sorted by geographical and technological categories, and evaluated by a panel of their peers in their practice area. Less than two percent of the approximately 30,000 registered patent attorneys were honored as Top Patent Prosecutors.
Joseph M. Barich was recognized as a Top Patent Prosecutor in the area of computer, electrical, software and business methods technology. He specializes in the development and monetization of patent portfolios and other IP rights. In developing portfolios for clients, he has prosecuted over 800 patent applications in the United States and foreign countries and has registered several hundred copyrights and numerous trademarks. His work has covered a wide variety of industries and has involved high-tech and medical innovations. Barich also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Illinois College of Law, where he teaches patent prosecution.
Aaron F. Barkoff was recognized in the area of pharmaceutical/biotechnology. He has extensive experience in ANDA litigation, from pre-filing investigations and strategy to dispositive motions, trials and appeals. In addition, he provides FDA regulatory advice relating to pharmaceuticals, including advice concerning patent term extensions under Section 156 and Orange Book patent listings. Barkoff is the author of the Orange Book Blog and is a regular speaker at pharmaceutical patent law conferences.
George F. Wheeler was recognized in the area of computer, electrical, software and business methods technology, as well as the area of chemical technology. He counsels corporate clients in a wide variety of patent matters involving diverse chemical, mechanical and medical technologies, including over 25 ex parte reexaminations and several inter partes reexaminations. His specialty is patent analysis and prosecution, both for patentees and for opponents of patents. Prior to McAndrews, Wheeler worked as an in-house patent attorney at The Procter & Gamble Company and Morton Thiokol, Inc.
Christopher C. Winslade was recognized as a Top Patent Prosecutor in the area of computer, electrical, software and business methods technology. He practices all aspects of intellectual property law. He has prepared and prosecuted thousands of patent applications for a wide variety of technologies, including broadband communications chips, wireless networks, satellite cellular telephone systems and smart batteries, among others. Much of Winslade’s prosecution experience has been strategic in nature, involving the continual analysis of market conditions and competitor’s patent positions with the goal of developing significant patent portfolios to protect product lines or generate licensing revenue. He has obtained patent protection that has resulted in generation of more than $1.6 billion in client revenue.
