Fox Rothschild Broadens IP and International Services with Addition of Los Angeles-Based Chan Law Group

Monday, August 22, 2011

Los Angeles, CA – Continuing its program of steady expansion, Fox Rothschild LLP is pleased to announce it has joined forces with noted intellectual property and business law firm Chan Law Group LLP in Los Angeles. Veteran IP lawyer Thomas T. Chan will join Fox Rothschild as partner along with counsel Lisa A. Karczewski and associate Steven S. Hanagami.

“We are delighted to welcome such a talented group of attorneys to our growing team here in Los Angeles,” said Mark L. Silow, firmwide managing partner. “They join our already deep intellectual property practice that covers a broad range of sciences and technology. And, the Chan Law Group’s specific experience in fostering business and commercial relationships between China and the United States will be a tremendous benefit to our existing clients.”

Chan, Karczewski and Hanagami will be resident both in office space located in downtown Los Angeles at 1055 West 7th Street, Suite 1880 and at the firm’s existing offices in Century City at 1800 Century Park East.

“Fox Rothschild is committed to strategic expansion of our presence in the LA market, and the addition of the Chan Law Group is an important step in this process,” said Jeffrey S. Kravitz, managing partner of the firm’s Los Angeles office. “We have built a strong team here in southern California in just a few short years and look forward to continuing to add practices that extend our ability to serve the firm’s clients.”

Chan is a well-respected and internationally known lawyer and mediator who has represented clients in complex litigation, strategic business transactions and mediation, particularly involving intellectual property, technology, entertainment and trade with China, for more than 30 years. He has engaged in precedent-setting work in intellectual property law and China trade.

Chan was trained as a mediator at the California Academy of Mediation Professionals and was selected to serve on the Panel of Neutrals of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and the Panel of Mediators and Arbitrators of the Los Angeles County Superior Courts. Fluent in Mandarin and Cantonese, he is a frequent lecturer and commentator who has been widely quoted in the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and other national newspapers and magazines and has made frequent guest appearances on television and radio broadcasts. He has been a speaker at the Finnish Institute for International Trade and MacWorld International Summit, among other outlets. Chan has testified at U.S. Congressional and administrative hearings on reducing trade barriers and protecting intellectual property and was appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to serve on the Industry Sector Advisory Committee, where he advised the United States on trade policies during the Reagan and senior Bush administrations. He was named a Top Intellectual Property Litigator in California in 2011 by the Daily Journal.

Karczewski has more than a decade of experience representing clients in patent prosecution and intellectual property transactional and litigation matters. She prepares and prosecutes utility and design patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in the technical areas of aerospace, biomedical, energy, materials science, mechanical and polymer chemistry. Karczewski also litigates intellectual property cases in the federal courts and before various federal agencies, including the International Trade Commission (Section 337) and the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
