New Partner John Garretson Joins SHB IP Practice

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Kansas City, MO -- Shook, Hardy & Bacon announced today that John Garretson has joined the firm’s Kansas City office as a partner in the Intellectual Property practice group.

Garretson brings with him an expertise in Hatch-Waxman cases, as well as an active patent litigation and counseling practice focusing on pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medical devices.

Most recently a principal at Fish & Richardson P.C. in New York, Garretson received his law degree from Georgetown in 1993 and his bachelor’s degree in biology from Harvard in 1989. He also received a C.S. in Spanish from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain in 1990.

“Our Intellectual Property practice leaders have developed a successful model for growing this group in a way that provides value to clients while delivering outstanding outcomes,” SHB Chair John Murphy said of the group which now includes more than 60 lawyers. “A key component to that strategy can be seen in the new relationship we have forged with John, who brings a deep understanding of the life sciences.”

“I am impressed with how this group has built a partnership that not only has a superior understanding of clients’ business concerns, but also has proven technical and courtroom expertise.” Garretson said. “Shook has a tremendous reputation. Nearly all its IP attorneys have degrees in biochemistry, electrical engineering or related fields, and many represent international clients. Shook’s calculated approach to building a national practice with global reach was a major part of my decision to join the firm.”

A former law clerk to The Honorable Boyce F. Martin, Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, Garretson also continues to remain active in the legal community. He is a member of the Intellectual Property Owners Association, as well as the American and New York Intellectual Property Law Associations. He has held several teaching and advisory positions, and is a frequent speaker and author in the United States, Japan and Europe on pharmaceutical and biotechnology patent issues.

Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P. is an international law firm with a legacy spanning more than a century. The firm has nearly 500 attorneys supported by more than 230 analysts and paraprofessionals serving a diverse client base from nine offices in Geneva, Houston, Kansas City, London, Miami, Orange County, San Francisco, Tampa, and Washington, D.C.

The Legal 500, publisher of an international series of guides offering coverage of legal services providers worldwide, recommends SHB’s Intellectual Property Practice as a “leading player” in its Fifth Edition of The Legal 500 US. Noting the firm’s strengths in patent prosecution and litigation, The Legal 500 recognizes the firm’s group as one that “boasts a number of high-profile clients and a history to rival most firms.”
