Bill Hart Retires from Proskauer Rose LLP

Wednesday, February 08, 2012

Bill Hart, a partner in the New York office of Proskauer, has retired from the full-time practice of law and will engage in various publishing and music pursuits in traditional and new media businesses. Bill will continue to be actively involved in Proskauer copyright-related matters in his capacity as a consultant to Proskauer.

Bill started practice as a protege of the late Professor Alan Latman, NYU’s noted copyright scholar, and was involved in many watershed copyright cases over the years, including a series of cases in the United States and Europe for the Religious Technology Center, including Netcom, which defined the ground rules for copyright on the Internet.

In his years at Proskauer, Bill played a critical role in cases such as the DVD encryption case in the 2d Circuit (Universal City Studios v. Remeirdes), as an amicus in the 3d Circuit’s Video Pipeline case and in the 9th Circuit’s reversal en banc in Sony Pictures-Silvers. Bill also played a key role in the YouTube infringement case now pending in the 2d Circuit. On the transactional side, Bill has handled many significant music publishing catalog transactions, including the Bob Marley and Jimmy Webb catalogs.

Bill teaches copyright at Brooklyn Law School and has written, lectured and published extensively in the field. Bill's strong background in publishing, music and the Internet is the focal point of his new business venture, the name and details of which have not yet been announced.
