Experienced Medical Device Pro Rejoins Firm

Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton announced today that Nena Bains has joined the firm’s Silicon Valley office as a partner on the Medical and Mechanical Devices Team. Ms. Bains, who worked at Kilpatrick Townsend’s West Coast predecessor Townsend and Townsend and Crew from 1999-2006 as an associate, served the past seven years as in-house counsel with Boston Scientific Corporation (BSC) and Asthmatx, Inc. in Sunnyvale, California.

“Nena is a seasoned medical device attorney with wide-ranging experience designing, building, and managing patent portfolios, guiding medical device projects through IP minefields and fundraising efforts, successfully concluding complex negotiations, and leading compliance efforts,” said Mark Barrish, a medical device partner at Kilpatrick Townsend. “She has a proven ability to provide timely, strategic guidance in all aspects of legal affairs while being a strong team player in dynamic and collaborative environments. I know clients will be as enthusiastic as we are to welcome Nena back to the firm.”

“I am excited at this unique opportunity to rejoin Kilpatrick Townsend,” said Ms. Bains. “I am looking forward to working with old and new colleagues and creating some great synergies with clients. I hope to bring additional insight and expertise from my years of working in-house at both large and small medical device companies. I am also thrilled to be working with Mark again and to help grow the medical device practice here in Silicon Valley while continuing to provide a high level of service to our clients.”

Ms. Bains, as BSC Vice President of Intellectual Property & Legal Affairs for over two years, managed all intellectual property and legal functions for the pulmonary franchise and assisted in business development IP due diligence.

Ms. Bains, as Asthmatx, Inc. Vice President of Intellectual Property & Legal Affairs and Assistant Corporate Secretary, was pivotal in the corporate development process which resulted in the acquisition of Asthmatx, Inc. by BSC in October 2010. She was also responsible for the creation and management of the worldwide patent and trademark portfolios. Ms. Bains served as chief compliance officer and was responsible for all commercialization programs, clinical, nondisclosure, supplier, consulting, research, and license agreements.

As a senior associate at the predecessor firm to Kilpatrick Townsend, Ms. Bains developed, prosecuted, and strategically managed patent portfolios and advised on competitive patent position analysis for individual inventors, early stage start-ups, large public companies, and venture capital firms.

Ms. Bains earned her Juris Doctor from the University of California, Davis School of Law and her Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering, magna cum laude, from the University of California San Diego.
