Intellectual Property Partner Jean-Paul (J.P.) Lavalleye Joins Dickstein Shapiro

Dickstein Shapiro LLP is pleased to announce that Jean-Paul (J.P.) Lavalleye has joined the firm’s Intellectual Property Practice as partner, effective April 30, in its Washington, DC office. J.P. is nationally known for representing a number of the world’s largest companies in patent matters and he is actively involved in all areas of patent law, with particular emphasis on patent counseling, patent disputes, litigation and litigation avoidance and/or resolution.

Mr. Lavalleye represents many multinational clients in various industries, on a wide range of intellectual property matters. His recent work includes successful representation of a French steelmaker in a number of patent infringement actions, and representation of a French multinational construction and high-performance materials manufacturer. He is fluent in French and his 30-plus years of global experience have made him especially skilled at helping foreign companies navigate the U.S. intellectual property system. Working with executives and attorneys from Europe to Japan, Mr. Lavalleye draws upon his cultural understanding and knowledge to counsel overseas clients on how to tactically and strategically protect their IP assets and their rights to commercialize their technologies within the United States. Mr. Lavalleye not only provides IP law guidance, he provides clients with business advice within the overall patent portfolio context. By developing business strategies that utilize patent protection methods, Mr. Lavalleye helps companies optimize the value of their IP assets and enhance their market position. Mr. Lavalleye holds a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center, a Ph. D. in organic chemistry from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an A.B. in Chemistry from Rutgers College. Prior to joining Dickstein Shapiro, he was a partner at the Virginia-based specialist intellectual property firm Oblon, Spivak, McClelland, Maier & Neustadt, LLP.
