Accomplished Trademark Attorney Thomas Williams Joins Ulmer & Berne in Chicago

Wednesday, May 01, 2013

Ulmer & Berne LLP announced a significant expansion of its trademark capabilities, with the addition of accomplished trademark attorney Thomas Williams as a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property & Technology Practice. Based in the firm’s Chicago office, Mr. Williams joins Ulmer & Berne from Winston & Strawn LLP, where he was a Chicago-based partner in the Intellectual Property Practice.

“Tom’s history of servicing the trademark-related needs of companies with large and highly sophisticated trademark portfolios meshes ideally with our existing capabilities,” said Eric M. Robbins, chair of Ulmer & Berne’s Intellectual Property & Technology Practice. “His presence deepens our strength as a go-to firm for trademark work, and further enables us to provide the highest levels of service and value to clients, no matter the size or complexity of their trademark needs.”

An internationally recognized litigator, Mr. Williams manages prosecution and maintenance of trademark portfolios and litigates trademark disputes on behalf of a number of the world’s largest and most sophisticated brands. He has extensive experience representing clients in all aspects of trademark law, including non-traditional marks and trade dress. Mr. Williams also represents brand owners in domain name disputes under the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) and Anti-cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA), and represents clients in trademark prosecution and counseling matters.

Mr. Williams regularly represents his clients before federal district and appellate courts in asserting and defending against trademark infringement claims. He also represents clients in proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and in alternative dispute resolution proceedings. In 2012 and 2013, he was recognized in World Trademark Review’s “WTR 1000” as one of the world’s leading practitioners of trademark law. In honoring him, the publication called Mr. Williams a “meticulous litigator,” and noted his successful representation of clients in civil court litigation, federal court, and administrative proceedings.

“Tom’s arrival is further indication of our firm’s growth and ability to attract top legal talent to service our sophisticated client base who increasingly demand both exceptional legal representation and value for the dollar from their outside counsel,” said Kip Reader, the firm’s managing partner. “We are thrilled to welcome Tom to the partnership and know that our clients will benefit from his skills and experience.”

“I have admired Ulmer & Berne and its attorneys for a number of years and am highly impressed with their legal skill and the results they produce for clients,” said Mr. Williams. “I look forward to joining the firm and expanding client relationships.”

Mr. Williams earned his undergraduate degree in behavioral sciences from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his law degree from the University of Illinois College of Law.

Representing clients ranging from start-ups to Fortune 100 companies, Ulmer & Berne’s Intellectual Property & Technology Practice establishes, preserves, defends, and commercializes the IP rights and technology assets of its clients. It leverages the knowledge and skill of lawyers experienced in the areas of patent and other IP litigation, copyright and trademark law; the protection and enforcement of trade secret rights; and the consummation of acquisitions, divestitures and licensing transactions dealing with technology assets, to assist its clients to achieve their business goals. They also have extensive experience in data privacy, protection, and information security.
