Thursday, October 10, 2013
Duane Morris LLP is pleased to announce that patent agent Cristin Berkey, Ph.D., has joined the firm in Boston to further expand its growing life sciences practice. Dr. Berkey joins the firm from Choate Hall & Stewart LLP.
Dr. Berkey's arrival is the latest in a series of significant developments for Duane Morris' flourishing life sciences practice. Earlier this year, the firm welcomed partners Kevin Nelson in Chicago, Leslie Croland in Miami and Jonathan Lourie in Boston. Nelson is an experienced patent litigator focusing on pharmaceutical patent litigation in Hatch-Waxman cases. Croland and Lourie offer a wealth of experience in the life sciences field, particularly in the areas of private equity and venture capital financing, mergers and acquisitions, licensing, technology transfer, joint ventures and collaborations. In addition, the firm was recently named among the top legal advisors worldwide in biotech and pharmaceutical licensing deals by BioPharm Insight, an independent business intelligence firm that is part of the Financial Times Group.
Dr. Berkey assists clients in the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, with a focus on genetics, microbiology and immunology. She also assists with due diligence reviews, infringement analyses and invalidity opinions. Dr. Berkey is a member of the Boston Patent Law Association and is active in its Patent Agents and Technical Specialists Committee. She is also a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
Between 1999 and 2012, Dr. Berkey published several scientific research papers in the fields of genetics and molecular biology. As a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital, Dr. Berkey researched microbial infection, studying the disease cholera and successfully identifying several new host genes affecting susceptibility to infection.
Dr. Berkey earned her B.S. in Biology, cum laude, from Tufts University in 2000. She subsequently attended Columbia University, where she earned an M.A. in Genetics in 2001, an M.Phil. in Genetics in 2003 and a Ph.D. in Genetics in 2006. She is currently attending Boston College Law School as a J.D. candidate.
