Taobao Marketplace and Louis Vuitton Commit to Combine Efforts in the Fight Against Counterfeiters

The Chinese online shopping platform Taobao Marketplace ("Taobao") and the luxury brand Louis Vuitton Malletier ("Louis Vuitton") are pleased to announce the signing this week of a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”), establishing guidelines for their active cooperation in the fight against online counterfeiting on the Taobao e-commerce platform.

The MOU is based on a number of proactive and preventive measures to fight against counterfeits, the first of their kind to be implemented by Taobao in direct cooperation with a brand owner. The recommendations also include a notice and takedown system to support these proactive measures.

Indeed, the MOU reflects the strong collaboration between Taobao and Louis Vuitton, as well as their long-term interest in establishing a mutual strategy based on efficient brand protection.

Both Taobao and Louis Vuitton are hopeful that these measures will significantly contribute to building a fairer and more transparent e-business environment for consumers on e-commerce sites.

This additional collaboration follows the support of Chinese authorities in the fight against counterfeiting. “Such collaboration is invaluable to us, in order to prevent the manufacture, transport and sales of counterfeit goods, online as well as off-line” said Valérie Sonnier, Global Intellectual Property Director for Louis Vuitton.

The fight against counterfeiting is an integral part of Louis Vuitton’s international strategy. Louis Vuitton has a zero tolerance policy against counterfeits. It is a duty that Louis Vuitton owes to its customers who trust the brand across the world and who recognize the true quality and the craftsmanship of its products.
