Goodwin Procter Expands Patent Prosecution & Counseling Practice With Addition of Daniel J. Burns in Silicon Valley

Tuesday, November 05, 2013

Goodwin Procter LLP, a national Am Law 50 firm, announced today that Daniel J. Burns has joined the firm’s Silicon Valley office as a partner in its Patent Prosecution & Counseling Practice. He comes to Goodwin from Fish & Richardson P.C. where he was a partner in the Silicon Valley office.

At Goodwin, Burns will focus on domestic and international patent prosecution in areas including software, Internet, information retrieval, cloud computing, renewable energy, machine learning, image processing, 3-D graphics, web technologies and bioinformatics, among others. He also works with client engineering teams and in-house counsel to identify and develop new inventions, advises on intellectual property agreements, prepares clients for licensing negotiations and conducts open source investigations.

“Intellectual property issues present challenges and opportunities to our clients every day, and Dan will provide expanded support to these companies in Silicon Valley and beyond,” said Anthony McCusker, head of Goodwin’s Silicon Valley office and leader of the firm’s Technology Companies Group. “His impressive technical background and keen legal skills boost our ability to serve clients seeking to leverage and protect their IP portfolios.”

Prior to his legal career, Burns was a software engineer and manager for 10 years and worked as an engineer in the Space Physics Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. He received his J.D. from Loyola Law School, his M.S. in computer science from California State University and his B.S. in computer science from Old Dominion University. He is admitted to practice in California as well as before the U.S. court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Patent and Trademark office.

He can be reached at 650.752.3100 or dburns@goodwinprocter.com.

Goodwin’s Patent Prosecution & Counseling Practice advises on every stage of patent prosecution to maximize the value of client property. Clients work closely with patent litigators, some of whom are former patent examiners with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, to anticipate how their business needs and strategies will change over time.

The firm’s Silicon Valley office opened in 2007 and is now home to more than 50 attorneys who provide business law and litigation services to a growing list of clients in the areas of private equity, venture capital, technology and life sciences, intellectual property, SEC investigations, and labor and employment matters.
