Honigman’s IP Litigation Practice Group Expands With the Addition of Partner Jamal M. Edwards

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Jamal M. Edwards has joined Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP as a partner in the firm’s Intellectual Property Department’s IP Litigation Practice Group. He brings substantial legal and management experience to Honigman and will be located in the firm’s Detroit office. Honigman’s growing IP practice serves clients locally, nationally and internationally.

Edwards will focus his IP Litigation practice on health care, technology and financial services. In the past year, he assisted, as an executive consultant, successful turnarounds for two start-up technology companies – one in health care and one in financial services. For the preceding two years, he successfully led a turnaround for a federally qualified health center in Chicago, where he served as CEO.

“The addition of Jamal, who has had experience at a national law firm, to our growing IP litigation practice will heighten our national reputation,” said J. Michael Huget, leader of the firm’s IP Litigation Practice Group. “His knowledge of the health care, technology and financial services industries as a businessman and as a lawyer are valuable assets for our clients.”

He was a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Chicago for several years, focusing his practice on IP, particularly in patent and trade secret litigation and counseling private equity investors and their technology holding companies. He previously was regional counsel for the IBM Corporation in Chicago. Prior to practicing law, he was an executive with Equifax, Inc., where he led important aspects of its risk management and card services businesses, including an internal automated locations services startup division.

Edwards earned a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and a B.A., cum laude, from Morehouse College. After law school, he served as a judicial clerk for Judge Roger L. Gregory in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, Virginia, and for Judge Raymond A. Jackson in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia in Norfolk. He is licensed to practice law in Michigan and Illinois.

Honigman’s IP Department consists of nearly 70 legal professionals with experience in patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret services, including search, procurement, enforcement and anti-counterfeiting. The professionals in the IP Department serve clients from large corporations to start-up companies and have experience in numerous industries, including automotive (OEM and suppliers), advertising, banking, biotechnology, consumer products, e-commerce, electronics, fashion, food and beverage, gaming and hospitality, insurance, medical services and devices, pharmaceuticals, publishing (newspapers, books, magazines and multi-media), real estate, restaurant, retailing, software, telecommunications and transportation.
