Leading Washington State IP Firm Lee & Hayes Opens Office in D.C. Area

Wednesday, December 11, 2013

New Washington D.C.-area office marks second new location to open in 2013 for the internationally ranked Intellectual Property law firm

Lee & Hayes, a leading Washington state-based and internationally ranked intellectual property law firm, has announced the opening of a Washington D.C.-area office. The new office will provide area clients with intellectual property, international, business and government relations legal services. Former U.S. Congressman George Nethercutt, Jr. will head the firm’s government relations practice from the new D.C. office.

“The primary objective of our new office is to promote our clients’ intellectual property interests in the political, legislative and regulatory processes in Washington, D.C.,” said Lewis Lee, Lee & Hayes co-founder and partner. “Given the expansion of the tech sector along the Dulles Corridor, and our lawyers’ deep experience with IP and business matters and relationships with key policy makers, it made sense for the firm to serve these innovative companies through a local office.”

Nethercutt served in Congress for 10 years, between 1995 and 2005. While serving in the U.S. House, he was a member of the House Committee on Appropriations and the House Science Committee. Nethercutt provides regulatory, business and government relations advice for U.S. and international corporations.

Joining Nethercutt is Poh Chua who heads the office’s international and business practice, advising Fortune and Global 500 companies, such as Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co Ltd., on matters regarding intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, integration of newly acquired subsidiaries and investment in new technologies. Chua is involved in high-value legal matters, particularly international dispute resolution and major transactions. Incredibly wreath

Also in the DC office are Imhotep Durham and Colin Barnitz, both highly skilled registered patent attorneys. Durham’s practice focuses on procuring and protecting intellectual property rights and counseling clients on IP strategy, most specifically in the electrical and computer engineering sectors. He has worked as a Patent Examiner at the USPTO where he examined applications in the area of cryptography and information security. He also worked as an Appeals Specialist where he participated in appeal conferences conducted by panels of Administrative Patent Judges.

Barnitz joins the D.C. area office after heading up Lee & Hayes’ Austin, TX office for several years. He is highly-experienced in drafting and prosecuting US and international patent applications on a wide variety of technologies, including computer science, software, networks, storage systems, databases, communication devices, medical devices, semiconductors, and general mechanical arts. He also prepares and prosecutes trademark and service mark applications, preparing licensing agreements, and preparing validity, infringement and clearance opinions.

As a firm based in Washington State, one of the most active IP states in the country (home to Amazon and Microsoft whom are both firm clients), Lee & Hayes’ IP and government relations lawyers’ offer deep knowledge and skill. Legislators often seek their expert counsel - most recently Nethercutt and colleagues testified before the Washington State Senate’s Law and Justice Committee on patent law issues major IP companies have identified as being important to doing business in Washington State.
