Historic meeting marks first time SIPR Committee visits with a U.S. law firm
Novak Druce Connolly Bove + Quigg LLP was honored to host 20 delegates from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on December 16, 2013, for a full day of educational seminars, meaningful conversations and a scenic excursion of the San Francisco Bay Area. Several dozen attorneys and staff in the San Francisco and Los Angeles offices participated in this historic event. MIIT is the state agency responsible for regulation and development of the Internet, wireless, broadcasting, communications, electronics and software industries. This marked the first time that members of this prominent Chinese ministry have greeted a U.S. law firm during their visit to the U.S.
The delegation was made up of notable decision-makers in the IP sector of the Chinese government. “To spend a full day with these officials during their short trip to the U.S. was unprecedented,” said Greg Novak, managing partner and CEO of the firm. “This opportunity enables Novak Druce to gain a better insight into the needs and concerns of this important sector of China that will further support our advancement into the China market.”
Last November, On Lu, a partner and the Director of the Asia Pacific Practice at Novak Druce, visited the Standards and Intellectual Property Rights Committee (SIPR) as his first step towards building a long-term relationship with the relevant agencies of the Chinese movement. SIPR, which is one of the four branches of China’s MITT, promotes and recommends IP standards, policies and laws for the Chinese government to enact. SIPR is also responsible for assisting Chinese enterprises in their pursuit of IP interests. Member corporations include ZTE Corporate, Huawei, Haier, Hisense, Konka, BOE Technology Group, Changhong and other China Fortune 100 companies. Every two years, SIPR organizes a tour for MIIT to the U.S. to study IP practices and infrastructure. The MIIT delegation traveled around the country to visit the likes of American University Washington College of Law, BSA, IEEE, Software & Information Industry Association, MOTO, Intellectual Ventures, RPX and INTEL.
“My vision is to overhaul the antiquated Asia practice model used by many law firms, where all Asia-related business is ‘funneled’ to a few people,” said Mr. Lu. “There's way too much business from Asia to be managed by a small group of people. Instead, Novak Druce looks to the ‘rain’ model, where everyone in our firm is originating business from Asia to the U.S. and vice versa, and the firm grows exponentially as a result.”
“The officials on this tour of the U.S. were selected through a rigorous process, and many will be receiving promotions upon their return. During their visit to the United States, the delegation traveled to New York, Chicago and Washington, DC, to partake in lectures, classes, training, simulations and seminars,” stated Mr. Lu.
Along with Mr. Lu, several partners from Novak Druce’s San Francisco and Houston offices, as well as a representative from the Oxford/Novak Druce Centre met with the MIIT delegation.
“I was informed that the Novak Druce visit was the visit everyone was most excited about,” said Mr. Lu.
