McDermott Continues to Bolster its Intellectual Property Practice

Tuesday, March 18, 2014

IP Litigator Michael V. O’Shaughnessy Joins in Washington, D.C.

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery LLP today announced that leading Intellectual Property litigator, Michael V. O’Shaughnessy, has joined the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office as partner. Mr. O’Shaughnessy focuses his practice on patent litigation and appeals and has significant experience handling matters in a variety of technologies, including the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, and chemical fields, which coincides nicely with McDermott’s goal of further strengthening its Life Sciences focus.

“Mike is a top-notch IP attorney with an impressive track record and entrepreneurial spirit, and we are delighted to welcome him to the Firm,” said Sarah Chapin Columbia, partner and head of McDermott’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group. “Our IP Litigation practice has experienced substantial growth over the past year across multiple offices and IP disciplines, allowing us to better serve and meet the growing and evolving demands of our clients. In particular, Mike will play a critical role in increasing our ability to grow our Life Science patent litigation and licensing practice.”

Last year, McDermott welcomed Bernard J. Knight, Jr., former U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) General Counsel and one of the nation’s most respected authorities on intellectual property law, to its IP practice in Washington. During that time, Brian M. Gaff joined as a partner in the Firm’s Boston office, bringing deep technical skills and strong patent litigation capabilities with his law and advanced electrical engineering background. Last month, Michael Chu, David Bluestone and Justin Rand joined in Chicago to add depth to the Firm’s worldwide IP practice while particularly strengthening its expanding IP practice in Asia.

“With a rise in the number of Life Science patent cases coming to the bench, and a particular demand for it in D.C., Mike’s experience and high-level insight in this industry will be a great asset to the Firm and our clients,” said Blair Jacobs, head of the Firm's Washington, D.C. Intellectual Property Litigation practice. “McDermott has achieved great success in courtroom battles relating to patents and other IP rights and Mike, who has been involved in 10 trials, taken more than 100 depositions, and acted as COO in dozens of cases, will make our group even stronger and substantially continue to grow our recognized visibility in Washington.”

Prior to joining McDermott, Mr. O’Shaughnessy, whose practice is focused on patent litigation and appeals, practiced at a global, first-rate intellectual property firm with a very strong appellate practice. In addition to his day job, Mr. O’Shaughnessy has taught courses on licensing of intellectual property at George Mason University Law School, and George Washington University Law School, and has lectured on similar subject matter to practicing patent attorneys and business professionals as a faculty member for the Patent Resources Group.

Mr. O’Shaughnessy earned his B.S. in Microbiology from Miami University and his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Virginia.

With more than 200 lawyers and patent agents around the world, McDermott’s Intellectual Property practice is renowned for its broad trial, appellate, prosecution and transaction experience. Members of the practice hold degrees in a wide variety of technical fields and are uniquely capable of handling intellectual property matters in virtually every technical or scientific discipline. For example, more than 140 members of McDermott’s intellectual property team hold technical and/or scientific degrees and more than 100 are registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). McDermott’s Intellectual Property practice includes numerous lawyers with valuable industry experience as well as former USPTO examiners and petition specialists.
